Interested in everyone's views - how do you think a whisky auction website would do in SA? It has to be something that one of the local retailers must have considered as a startup side project??
Think there are a number of guys with some decent bottles that they would like to sell and I don't think the shop middleman model works. I wont even comment on Gumtree or BoB - I feel the personal safety risks are too great.
Let me know.
Thanks man appreciate the thoughtsI think the problem is they'd be flooded with things no one actually wants, like 1980s tins, Bell's decanters, JW Blue etc.
It's also a logistical nightmare to collate bottles, and properly inform on condition etc. I reckon most who would try use it would probably end up losing money on the auction fees. While there are certainly some people who would consider selling what they have, I don't see that being the case for most people I know.
It seems pretty easy to sell stuff without a middleman to the whisky community, put it in a spreadsheet send to some regulars in this thread/whatsapp groups, and I'm sure you'd at least get offers for things people actually value. :\

I sold my whole Whisky collection of 158 bottles during the last 6 months or so, just by posting in the WA groups I'm in. And that included 43 OPEN bottles...Interested in everyone's views - how do you think a whisky auction website would do in SA? This is my next Islay, (HOPEFULLY) if I can get myself to safe up enough to buy a bottle. It is impossible not to spent that money on a bottle Laphroaig or Arbeg once you reach the R700 mark
I used to be a big fan and still think that it is a good Whisky...BUT it has become overpriced for what you get even though it is a 16yo.This is my next Islay, (HOPEFULLY) if I can get myself to safe up enough to buy a bottle. For that price I'd rather buy an Ardbeg Corry or a Kilkerran 8yo or 2 bottles of Talisker...or Scarabus Batch Strength or even a bottle of Smokey McSmokeface (SMWS-SA)
And I am sure that other members here can come up with even better buys...from their experiences.

I was considering a bottle yesterday and ended up counting my pennies and instead grabbed a Caol Ila 12 yo.
Seems like many recommend Talisker. How does it compare to Islays like Ardbeg and Laphroaig given that it is not an IslayConcur fully - had not bought in years, bought one last July after end of first lockdown to revisit - still sitting unopened. In the same time, two bottles of Talisker 10 come and gone, an Ardbeg 10 and a Wee Beastie.
