Interested in everyone's views - how do you think a whisky auction website would do in SA? It has to be something that one of the local retailers must have considered as a startup side project??

Think there are a number of guys with some decent bottles that they would like to sell and I don't think the shop middleman model works. I wont even comment on Gumtree or BoB - I feel the personal safety risks are too great.

Let me know.

I think the problem is they'd be flooded with things no one actually wants, like 1980s tins, Bell's decanters, JW Blue etc.
It's also a logistical nightmare to collate bottles, and properly inform on condition etc. I reckon most who would try use it would probably end up losing money on the auction fees. While there are certainly some people who would consider selling what they have, I don't see that being the case for most people I know.

It seems pretty easy to sell stuff without a middleman to the whisky community, put it in a spreadsheet send to some regulars in this thread/whatsapp groups, and I'm sure you'd at least get offers for things people actually value. :\

Marc, Sav and Dave are all happy to take bottles and pop on their site for sale and take a small commission. These bottles pop up from time to time.

Personally, I like the idea, but I think the local market is too small to make it a viable business. Maybe a good side hustle?

I sold my whole Whisky collection of 158 bottles during the last 6 months or so, just by posting in the WA groups I'm in. And that included 43 OPEN bottles...

So it is important getting involved with Whisky groups and people and clubs...this opens all the doors you need for selling, buying and trading.

The whisky auction scene in South Africa is a dumpster fire...

PS>

Auctions also lead to ALL kinds of shenanigans and outrageous and unrealistic prices. Selling at fair prices to knowledgeable people/friends/clubmembers are much preferred.

This leads to less bottle flipping, if any at all, and more to people selling Whisky to just make their money back to buy OTHER Whisky.

This is my next Islay, (HOPEFULLY) if I can get myself to safe up enough to buy a bottle. It is impossible not to spent that money on a bottle Laphroaig or Arbeg once you reach the R700 mark
I used to be a big fan and still think that it is a good Whisky...BUT it has become overpriced for what you get even though it is a 16yo.
For that price I'd rather buy an Ardbeg Corry or a Kilkerran 8yo or 2 bottles of Talisker...or Scarabus Batch Strength or even a bottle of Smokey McSmokeface (SMWS-SA)

And I am sure that other members here can come up with even better buys...from their experiences.

Many thanks for your suggestions. You might have just changed my mind

I was considering a bottle yesterday and ended up counting my pennies and instead grabbed a Caol Ila 12 yo.

Concur fully - had not bought in years, bought one last July after end of first lockdown to revisit - still sitting unopened. In the same time, two bottles of Talisker 10 come and gone, an Ardbeg 10 and a Wee Beastie.

See what you think - I also battle with Caol Ila core releases - eyes been opened by SMWS, PBC and S&S single casks though which are brilliant.

Seems like many recommend Talisker. How does it compare to Islays like Ardbeg and Laphroaig given that it is not an Islay

To me Taliksker tends to be more smokey than peaty (if that makes sense). You also get more coastal (sea spray) notes. Another note you'll often find is a bit of pepper.
