Has anyone been through dutyfree at ORTambo recently and can advise if there is a whiskey in the R800 range worth getting.
I have friends coming but they dont know about whiskey so I want to tell them a specific bottle or 2 to be on the lookout for.

Just got my two bottles

I'm done with the more pricey / weird and wonderful Bain's releases to be honest

plain 'ol Bain's is ok, but I only just got rid of the Shiraz cask 1L bottle ... it was shyte imo, hangovers were awful and not just because it was cask strength, ended up mixing it with all my other awful scraps of booze:
- added some regular Bain's which improved things
- added some Auchentoshan which I couldn't stomach by itself anymore, didn't exactly improve the Bain's "blend" though at least didn't make it worse
- added some JD Rye because it was terribly disappointing for me compared to Buffalo Trace, again didn't really improve things, but didn't make it worse either

tonight after polishing two bottles of Highland Park 12 and a Ardbeg Wee Beastie recently, all acquired after that mix from hell, I was back on the mix, tried not to buy anything else until I finally finish off the abomination ... well it just went down the drain, f-it, life's too short, never again a Bain's special version for me

I'll stick to the Three Ships family, the Shiraz cask finish also wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but at least I could savour it to the end and appreciate without dumping it into the drain

now; literally the only whisky in the house is an unopened Highland Park 12yo single cask (the whisky brother edition) so it is time to buy again

time for some variety and hopefully quality, one of each en route:

Maybe the answer is you don't like a wine finish. But if you are klapping 3 bottles a night and then finishing off with a Bains cask strength I imagine the hangover will be severe no matter what you finish with.

yeah that's some unintended ambiguity in my grammar, didn't klap 3 bottles in a night :X3:

the Bain's was just sitting on the shelf so long that I kept sipping preferred drams over time and ended up finishing 3 other bottles the past couple of months rather than touch the Bain's even once

you might be right about the wine finish, but then again the Three Ships Pinotage and Three Ships Shiraz were both fine for me, certainly not something I'd pour down the drain

I very much enjoy the Bains shiraz cask, I wouldn't drink it everyday or drink a number of them in one go. Must say though I do prefer the three ships shiraz cask. Would definitely buy it over the Bains if were to buy more

Everybody has a different palate. Before throwing anymore away. I'll take it.

That S&S set will cost you plenty of money - let me save you some time - buy a bottle of the S&S Ardmore and the Ledaig now if you still can - you can thank me later.

I concur. If u have to choose between either then go for the Ledaig. My 2020 whisky of the year:

:X3: I would have given it away had I not mixed in other whiskies and created something slightly better imo, but most definitely not what was on the bottle label anymore

thx, next time I'll ask beforehand, the set is pricey for sure ... but I was willing to look past that given every sample in it is a limited edition of some description and it even contains a 24yr and a 45yr sample

That S&S sample set is pricey, but amazing...since the Whisky in there is amazing.

I concur on the Ledaig...it is phenomenal. Luckily WaW still has stock at a "bargain" of a price compared to what other places were charging.

Unfortunately that Springbank tasting set contains Whisky's that you cannot find, unless you buy at auction or are extremely lucky/connected.

I agree with this point. One or two goodies but after I finished my pack I have actually decided not to open the full bottles I had just yet. The Longrow Refil Malbec is one example for me...

The 17 Madeira is a thing of beauty imo.

The word you were looking for is boring. Springbank 15 beats it in everyway. :|

Initial hit was empty, most unique part was I don't usually get apple from a springbank, it is at least somewhat funky and has an oily palate and some minerality with a burnt custard finish. It definitely improved after being left in the glass for a while.

I'm reluctant to say this is better than the 18 I've had but in both cases I'd still rather have the 15, regardless of price.

Glad you like it and glad I didn't (even have a) chance a bottle. :D

Haha. No - I meant beauty.
Interesting. I enjoyed it.

The most disappointing one in the box for me was the Kilkerran 16. Was really excited for it and I didn’t like it. Maybe I over-hyped it and expected too much.
