You seem a bit young to remember this incident. There was a lot of complaining in the "white" papers eg: The Star and on the JHB radio stations.

Yes in both the newspapers and radio.
Inconsideration from both local and overseas officials remains the same and it is unacceptable to ALL races to have speeding /crawling convoys causing chaos on our roads.
What exactly is the problem with a speeding convoy. I would think they do us a favour by passing by quickly.
But to go chasing after one just so you can snap along is just plain dumb, and smells of obsession. The guy could have been killed for Christ sake.

He could have been killed but the convoy was ok to do it?
The point is that our elected officials believe that they are above the law.
I would think they don't apply to emergency vehicles. The only pertinent question is with regards to whether an emergency situation existed or not. I don't think any of us are qualified to make a judgement on what constitutes an emergency and what doesn't unless one is a member of the vip protection unit.

This has already been cleared up. Emergency means a life or death situation. Being late for a meeting on the other hand...
I guess some people will go to any lengths to defend the indefensible.
when they get caught by law obeying citizens.I meant he could have been seen as threatening and therefore couls have been shot at.
The elected officials do carry a higher security risk than normal civilians hence the VIP protection arrangement.

Speak for yourself. I certainly am able to make an intellectual judgement and differentiate between slackness (as in speeding because of being late)and a valid emergency.
I'm not defending the indefensible, but I think we are barking up the wrong tree by placing the blame at the VIP's doorstep. His bodyguards most likely make the decision about safe routes to take, safe speeds to travel at etc.

Breaking the Law is Breaking the law... there is NO excuse for it. The Motorcade drivers should have known better, as accidents happen (hence the name... you CANT predict them, no matter how safe they thought the roads are)
The president isnt above the LAW, so why should this scummbag be?

It is my opinion that what the w-b did was dangerous, and reckless; when the situation presents itself again, I would caution people to think first before speeding off with a camera in hand.
The w-b should also be fined as if he were caught by a speed trap. Since he has said that he will pay the fine, good for him.
On the other hand, he was performing the citizen's duty to report criminal behavior of government agents. This duty is vital to the functioning of a democracy.
In that he risked other peoples lives, bad; in that he performed his duty as a citizen; good; in that he is prepared to pay the consequences of his recklessness, excellent.

This time no law was broken. The law makes provision for vip protection unit to exeed the speed limits under emergency situations.
The person who broke the law was the whistle blower. His over-zealousness will land him in jail one day (or dead)

If he was not wrong and his body guards were the problem then he should have just apologised. But then again when have you ever heard of one these guys apologise ?
