Hmmm

This is probably a symptom of the times. Many black people during apartheid became "Peter", "John", "Moses" etc. Now that apartheid is with us again in the form of AA and BEE, should we be surprised that white people are adopting black names.

thats a thought...

More than likely he never applied for an AA job, probably just doing BEE work.

When tendering you just supply your CK1 form and if the names look good then you get the job.

They rarely do site visits and Mr. Dlamini does not have to show up for meetings ; as even being on time would be un-African. LOL

Skeptik, Please enlighten me how AA and BEE are similar to apartheid.

??? Um RACIAL DISCRIMINATION ring a bell?

(even the legislation looks the same - and if they continue their time will come, just like the previous government.)

Um AA = positive discrimination. And it is not entirely racial in nature. A white female, or a disabled white male benefits from AA. The fact that you are not part of the targeted groups does not mean you are being discrimnated against (at least it's not based on your race). Either way you can still benefit from AA through the other groups that are the targeted, i.e your mother, sister or wife if you happen to be a perfectly abled white male.

What is your thought...
A white south african marries a black south african... are their children PDIs? Do they qualify for BEE and AA?
Yes they qualify for AA if they are part of these groups, non-white, female, disabled or from the rural areas. This is not just my opinion, it's the Employment Equity Act of SA.

positive discrimination == DISCRIMINATION
And it is not entirely racial in nature == TRUE (however it's mostly racial)

The fact that you are not part of the targeted groups does not mean you are being discrimnated against (at least it's not based on your race).
Aaaaw - c'mon.

Either way you can still benefit from AA through the other groups that are the targeted, i.e your mother, sister or wife if you happen to be a perfectly abled white male.
Similarly your mother/sister/wife can 'benefit' from you being unable to support your family due to AA. Wow.

To my knowledge there is no "background" checks to make sure your parents are black. If you fit the colour profile and you have an "African" sounding name, you're probably an AA candidate.

whites can go where they want how they want and when they want?

i dont recall blacks being able to do this under the afrikaaner government

apartheid was bad blacks couldnt do anything

hense why there are measures in place to ensure that black ppl get jobs

this is not racial discrimination, its settings things right in the wrong way :) dunno if that makes sense

A friend of mine has a PDI sounding surname. He was phoned for a job offer for management for a new company. Once it was established that he was PA the offer changed to a lower position. Blatent.

AA didn't even work in America where the 'disadvantaged' groups is 10% of the population. How will it work where the disadvantaged is 90% of the population. If the 90% were still educated, then yes, but as it stands education doesn't seem to be a priority, as government is too busy thinking of ways to lower the standards, so that everybody can pass. News24 has a nice article about the maths pass rate since 1994.

You guys are disingenuously trying to deflect or downplay the role of past and current institutional discrimination.
There are numerous examples that show ways in which employees get hired based on non-merit criteria. The "Old Boy's Network" for a example. Such a network exists where people with power in organizations are able to and readily promote, and support one another as well as others who are close to them within the organization. Such a network goes against, the principles of a true 'meritocracy'. Nobody from outside the "Old Boy's Network" can get promoted 'from within' a company unless the job is clearly designated for AA.
If you dispute the existence of such a network then you are either not living in SA or it is so hard for you to see it because you are part of it.

Hey, that's my argument that you are using! How can we do away with affirmative action when the 10% controls 90% of the economy and owns 90%of the land (such an important factor of production)?

On the other hand, AA does have unintended and undesirable side-effects and it is currently failing to achieve its goals. It is currently benefitting the more privileged people within disenfranchised groups (upper/middle class blacks) at the expense of the majority poor blacks. But that is a problem with implemetation which does not mean that AA is in itself wrong. Apartheid however was a different story altogether. Likening the two is like likening HF Verwoed to Madiba!

In that case then the kid will be resident in the US or will not really be queeing for an AA job. what's your point?
Like I said, AA is open to exploitation but that does not mean it is not working for the right purposes.

Again you're right, yet so wrong. An 'old boys network' is one thing, a clearly discriminatory piece of LEGISLATION is quite another.

Old Boys' Network? Not here, or anywhere close. Percentages of percentages. AA and BEE has resulted in people not qualified for their positions. Dead wood. What sane ceo or group of shareholders wants "directed by law." (What are the positive or negative impacts of this on the economy and the creation of jobs?)

Do you want to put that important factor of production at risk? Therefore don't fuk with it or find an alternative.
