Wow... tinnitus - is it bad? I get that ringing regularly - what causes it?
Nobody knows afaik.

To counter this, the circuitry in the headphones sample background frequencies and in a very short time produce a counter frequency to cancel the unwanted ones. The result is much reduced background noise. These can never be eliminated entirely but the result is better than using passive noise reduction alone.
+1

I want one of those.

For communication in a noisy environment and hearing protection. If, say, you are in an aircraft with the constant whine of the turbines damaging hearing and disrupting radio conversations. To counter this, the circuitry in the headphones sample background frequencies and in a very short time produce a counter frequency to cancel the unwanted ones. The result is much reduced background noise. These can never be eliminated entirely but the result is better than using passive noise reduction alone.

Thats pretty serious engineering! Never realised that. So you get the real thing and these cheap things that make hissing noise? Methinks i need a pair for the plane (not cheap lol)!

Loud noises like gun and cannon shots, high power amplified music, compressed air hammers and a host of other loud noises causes it. Unfortunately most people don't believe you when you tell them to tone down load noises or use ear protectors.
When the problem of tinnitus becomes evident it is unfortunately to late and irreversible and you have to live with it.
Ask me, it is very irritating. I also thought I could handle artillery shots on test ranges with the minimum ear protection when young, I was wrong.

Tone down those 1000W boom boxes or you will suffer later. ;)

I got a pair of ear protectors from http://www.protecear.co.za/ about a year ago and must say it's been a good investment.

They make the protectors from your ear impressions made from a foam like substance that they injected into your ears to get the impression.

Living with Tinnitus can be a nightmare sometimes but I just pop these in my ear when I go to bed when the ringing gets out of control.

I don't know if this might help, just found it on google.
