All soccer players in SA are lazy ... one only had to try watch the "Huge Soweto Soccer Derby" yesterday to see this. Yawn - managed 5 minutes before I caught myself pulling shoelaces of drool on the couch. Luckily I recorded it so next time I have problems falling asleep I can just put that shyte on

For what, kids have had 16 years not to be lazy and start playing soccer.

I have to agree with the first part without the white thought. Kids are very lazy. No more sport or PT at school. So if they do not feel like doing sport they do not. So we will miss a whole lot of sport geniuses in the whole colour spectrum. Because nobody made them try at least once.

Same with it the whole ABSA Currie Cup debacle. If all kids were forced to try rugby for the last 15 years I’m sure we would have been able to support our own “all Black team” by now. Anmd not have cared as long as they kick Ausie Butt.


Kids are lazy and sports are not promoted constantly to them during the 12 years at school.

if i had a choice between the two, i'd choose rugby in the South African context not because of race or anything like that, but because rugby is better organised.
we hear about all the issues with SAFA, and although rugby has its moments, it's still run pretty well... just look at the rugby results SA and the local teams have achieved.

Sumo wrestling is also more phyisical but can barely go the distance.
By the end of 80 mins the rugby guys are huffing and puffing with hands over their heads whereas soccer players can go on for as long as 120 minutes. Rugby is more physical contact whereas soccer is more physically demanding in terms of speed and endurance. Compare the physiques of the two sporting codes and you will notice which sport makes one fitter.

Having said that though...soccer is way too simple compared to rugby. Hence soccer is more popular (anyone can play it, watch it and enjoy it). I doubt there is even more than 20 rules governing the game of scoccer. That alone makes rugby more complex and intellectually more challenging compared to soccer.

It's simple really - an attacker receiving a pass cannot be ahead of the ball and the last defender when the pass is made to him.

I do not think it's the private school thing as much as rugby needs grass. And soccer can be played on dusty roads and tar. So the choice between diving into the ground becomes easier... rather play soccer Even if you have grass two people can have a go at soccer rugby you need more.

There is a lot of things that makes the choice not money alone, at the same time private schools do have softer grass. but then again the facilities are there for soccer too.

You are right about that. With soccer all you need is an open space. The ball and poles can be made from refuse material

the sad truth is that white kids stay away from football as its perceived to be a "black" sport, people pretend otherwise but thats the real reason.

our school didn't even offer soccer because then they would have to drive into the townships for league, and they felt that would be dangerous for the kids, so we just naturally gravitated towards rugby.....

My school didn't offer soccer, but boy did we play alot of it. Every break from grade 4 to matric we played football. Without fail, unless it was raining really hard.

Stupid school governing body wouldn't introduce it as an official sport, they decided to stick with rugby and hockey as winter sports. I ended up playing hockey.

EDIT: Re, soccer being "too simple" just because a sport is more complex doesn't mean it is better. Soccer is not the called the beautiful game for nothing, it's elegance lies in its simplicity.

Yea, in more "white" schools, soccer was not an option when i was there . It was rugby, cricket and something like hockey. I am sure i would've played Soccer if it was part of the "culture" when i was in school and even university [Stellenbosch]. Soccer just ain't part of the south african white culture, nothing about laziness or which race plays it more right now. If the sport is not being played and supported in schools and universities and even in your local residential areas then people don't play it. My parents didn't watch soccer either, it was rugby and cricket and that's it, i personally would have preferred soccer actually.

Even the schools that DO cater for soccer in some form are treating it as a side-sport, it won't have a big "interschool" or "intervarcity" day where everyone in all age groups play against other....you do get it with Rugby, Cricket and such.

I won't be surprised if you send a Black guy to Grey College or Paul Roos he will not come out as a Soccer player, but a rugby/cricket player....
