The number of white South Africans who give emigration as the reason for selling their home has shot up in recent months as high crime levels and political and economic uncertainty spur the flight of whites from the Rainbow Nation.

A survey by South Africa's First National Bank (FNB) showed the proportion of homeowners who said they were putting their homes on the market because they were emigrating had doubled between the last quarter of 2007 and the second quarter of 2008, from 9 percent to 18 percent.

Kind of sad, but understandable :(

I'm making a point of it to see the world. Once I'm back from Brazil, I'm going to visit Australia and Europe... Things in SA are not good...

I think Emigrating is a good excuse for people that can no longer afford their homes.

Granted, a lot of people are leaving, but I've seen certain people saying that they are selling as they are "emigrating" only to downgrade/rent after the sale went through....

I disagree. A buddy of mine is busy heading to NZ. The house prices there are 100% insane. They are living in a paid-off 2.5m house atm and they reckon its going to be seriously tight finding something live-able on the other side.

From what he tells me I learned 1 thing: Emigrating is not for those struggling financially.

.

Little bit misleading because the 'number' has not shot up at all. The percentage has shot up.

Because the number of people selling their homes has dropped +40%, the actual number of people selling to emigrate has remained constant.

It's amazing how dangerous total ignorance of statistics can be in the hands of a journalist.

Where do you get the 40% figure from?

yeah. you will start over again, financially. But in the end of the day, your standard of living will balance out with everyone's in the foreign country. Of course, you will only be able to immigrate if you are already wealthy or you have a skill.

My brother-in-law just moved over to NZ in April. He is loving it.

Ummm, good question.

It was a number that I read from an estate agent somewhere. WIil try to find it.
With the gazillion foreclosures going on atm, I doubt that the number of people selling has dropped. The number of actual sales going through might have dropped though.

We moved to NZ 5 months ago. The Maori's are a minority and it just baffles the mind that someone who obviously know's so little about another country can make a stupid statement like Peder. You name a nationality and it is in this country. Best is we all here live together and respect each other's differences. In a small office of 30 people we have South Africans, English, Kiwi, Chinese, Fijian, Scots, Ozzies, Maori, Indian and a Sri lankan. Rather than spewing out nonsense, go and read about this country and then maybe, just maybe you will understand why the South Africans love NZ with all her cultures and wonders. And why it will be a cold day in Hell before NZ will ever be in the situation SA is in. I will always be a child of Africa, but just as it is hard for some Kiwi's to understand what the violent crimes are like in SA, it seems some Saffers find it difficult to immagine a world with little crime and lots of cultures living peacefully together.

yes, but what's a drove?

ps some stats show NZ as leading the world in crime, albeit not murders and whatnot, but boy they do lead in crimes involving sheep, and man o man but can they litter and jaywalk!!

Badprop, I would appreciate any advice you could give me regarding emigrating to NZ. Please PM me with anything you feel it worthwhile considering. Thanks!

EDIT: that goes for anyone offering genuine advice!

Litter? You have no idea. You'll be lucky if you see ANY litter here. Jaywalking? Amateurs in relation to SA.

There have been (and still are) some problems inside the (large) Chinese community. Last week a little Chinese girl was kidnapped but found. It was a matter confined to the Chinese community.

Also the PI's (pacific islanders; Samoans, Tongans etc) are picking on the Chinese community in South Auckland.

Last weekend the average murder rate for NZ doubled. Two people were murdered that weekend as opposed to the usual 1.

Peder, the word is Maori.

It still amazes me that some people in SA can support AA/BEE. But I suppose these people are the type that still believe that for every white that leaves there is another job for a black. Nveremind that that white person had a Masters in engineering and that the replacement black has matric with neither maths nor science. This attitude seems to be the policy at Eskom where 2 new people will be employed every day for the next 5 years. One of whom will be a black female. Not and engineer or technician. Just a black female.

There really is a serious under-appreciation for skills and their value in SA and this is reflected in the dreadful salaries the hghly skilled receive.
