If I have stumbled upon a website and would like a similar layout, is it possible to find out who designed that website?

This is without asking the owners of the site as I will be in direct competition with them (same product/service).

Web designers "usually" add the site to there portfolio, try and see who all link to the site and search via google.

A compatant web designer should be able to re-create something close, though they are far & few in between.

outta interest, which site? PM if you don't want to pub. Only interested since web/internet development is my business.

If you view the HTML source of the page, the web company name or website URL or something may be hidden in some comments or something.

All of the above - but most designers have a credit somewhere on the website. If you need to search for the credit, it may be possible that it was done in-house? Otherwise, if the designer is worth their salt, there should be a meta-keyword (author) in each page.

I would think even if you contacted the designer some ethics may come in to them doing for you what they done for your competitor...

The design doesn't have to be the same though. I have no hassles designing 2 sites for competitors - as long as the design is different, the function can (and likely will) be similar. Such is the nature of web apps.
