Who here eats Fish Paste?

forgive my ignorance

but isnt fish paste almost like mince meat?

both are made from ground up fish/meat, almost like polony/viennas?

must be a lot of preservatives/chemicals/fillers added?

Do you keep minced meat for months in your cupboard? I don’t...

If you mean corned beef yes.

so its closer to corned beef, than mince meat?

ok, learned something there.

still must be loaded with preservatives/chemicals to stay fresh that long?

Minced meat is a fresh product that you keep in the fridge/freezer.

Fish paste is a long life product that you keep in the cupboard.

That’s why I mentioned corned beef as it’s the only beef product that I see being long life but fish paste is more of a spread.

No it's not. Or that changes as soon as you open it for the first time,

Sure, when I feel like or remember to get some -which is not often.
As for people pulling up their noses because it's fermented or whatever, there are worse things you probably eat already.

Like many cupboard products in jars (corned beef, tuna, veggies in jars...). Once opened, you put it in the fridge...

I like fermented things (kimchi, yoghurt, sauerkraut, sour cream, dosa, soy sauce, Ambra di Talamello) just not fermented fish (or even fish soup) and I anyway don’t like anchovies or sardines even fresh.

I like fish raw or grilled, full stop.

Well then, if you don't mind fermented stuff, the comment obviously doesn't apply to you ;)

Haven't had in a while simply. Main issue I had was that it went mouldy pretty quickly once opened.

Is it good for Banting I wonder?

According to the labelling of just about ALL fish pastes and other "pastes", they need to be refrigerated AFTER opening and then consumed within a fixed period (10 days) after opening. If products go mouldy in your fridge too quickly, it is because the temperature settings for your fridge are wrong, and, you are not doing anything about cleaning out your fridge often enough.

Like most things it is an acquired taste. Very influenced by what you were exposed to as a child.
As to anchovy paste. Like everything else these days, the product is no longer what it started out to be. AN ANCHOVY paste. Now, it by law, it must contain a minimum of 2% of anchovies only. The rest is all sorts of things even soya flour.

Anchovies are scarce these days, hence why the " quality" varies seasonally.

I’ll pop the champagne the day anchovies disappear and Caesar salads and pizzas are finally liberated.

We always keep the fish paste bottle upside down in the fridge (it's supposed too last longer), then again a bottle doesn't last longer than a week in my house.

Best Fish paste taste sensation; Hot white toast with real butter applied immediately followed by the fish paste spread.

Fish paste is good for Banting, just depends what you spread it on ;)

Love it

Pecks use to make a hot version which I have not seen in yonks. Pecks smoked salmon is also nice, redro is not as good as pecks.

Oh and I love mrmite & bovril too :D
