Is the 8800 Ultra worth the extra R 2000-00, over the 8800GTX for a 10% increase in performance??

I actually have to rephrase, why would anyone waste R2000 on a Ultra?

nope

complete waste of money

ppl would be better off getting 2 x 8800gts 640 meg or even the 320 meg

My customer got the 8800 Ultra ... there is quite a noticable difference ... but not worth the price for me ... the only reason you would get one is if you were an enthusiast like my customer.

Well it was noticeable because he runs a 30" Apple Mac screen with games running at 2560x1600 ... so you are talking about games running at 30fps as opposed to 25fps which is quite noticeable ... and on full graphics setting in the new games ... 25fps and even 30fps as opposed to 15-20fps ... but depending as well

I think its 2560 x 1600 ... its 2560 x something ... but I never get it right :P

We initially went for the overclocked XXX card by XFX ... but there were big memory leak issues at such high res high intensity with that card so we got a standard Asus ... and you can even slightly notice that performance difference.

The Ultra isn't worth it at all even for the enthusiast for the most part. If you are into world records and that sort of thing yes sure thing, but you better be buying two of them and not one because the guy with 2x 8800GTS 640MB cards is going to whip you in all benchmarks and in games as well :/

The Ultra in general however is far from cost effective and by and large is a waste of money :/

Well my customer's reasoning ... He does not want to use SLI as he does not like it ... also he wants 1 high end card as opposed to "2" low end cards.
Every one has their own opinion ... you might say hogwash ... rather go SLI ... but some people do not like SLI and feel SLI is problematic ... so the next best thing was this card.

Why the Merc SL 65 AMG, instead of the 63 AMG or even the 500 ?
Because some people can.

At high resolutions it does help to have an Ultra. But at the end of the day you might just as well buy a 8800GTX and OC it to ultra speeds. I'm running mine now at 630Mhz GPU and 2000Mhz memory.

Not exactly as fast as the Ultra but close enough so that you really won't see a difference. Also, as was said the card is very CPU limited, overclocking your CPU helps boost performance almost more than overclocking the card itself.

That's just silly. It's far from enjoyable playing games at ~30 FPS. Bigger is not always better.

Well I don't know the exact FPS ... I was giving an example ... but everyone likes it their own way ... some people prefer a 17" or 19" ... and some a 30".
Also ... in terms of getting a GTX and overclocking ... he is not interested in overclocking at all.
