Why do mods close threads about high mobile data prices?

I don't believe it's about whether a thread is closed or shredded to hell & gone. It's about being consistent. There are many threads that are contentious, some even having a go at the reps, but they aren't closed as swiftly. I've even reported some myself that were clearly getting personal and insulting, only to have the situation completely ignored after days. Some are still there with someone calling me a name of some sort.

So let's devide this into two parts here. You clearly still have a problem with how the wheat was split from the chaff. All the posts from both threads are in tact. So tell me if any of the posts in the latter part add any value to the OP being assisted? If you still have an issue PM me.

Second part. Again I can't speak for all the mods, but I only get the RBP emails for the forums I look after (which is only a handful). It's impossible to read every single thread, so we rely on people reporting posts. If you've RBP's a thread and it's not getting attention, PM a mod and ask for help.

Then we all have different moderation styles and moderate different parts of the forum. Moderating "Off Topic" for example will be different to moderating "Mobile Broadband | HSPA, 3G, EDGE, GPRS". We do often discuss certain threads and have a collected weigh in on what should happen to it, but for the day-to-day stuff we operate reasonably independently within the forums we manage. I have on a couple of occasion deferred threads to other mods for input and a sanity checks, so it's not "swing the ban hammer with wild abandon attitude" all round, which I seem to be getting the impression some people think that's what a mod is all about.

Maybe it's just me but I don't see a problem with people voicing their frustrations and anger at poor service delivery.

You might see it as "not contributing", I see it as Censoring.

You still don't get it. I don't have a problem with people voicing frustrations all I'm asking for is that they do it in a civil manner, so they can either be helped or can be engaged in thought through debate

Sure but why shut down MY THREAD when another person is misbehaving?

Pretty sure I've answered that already...

You asked for a price drop and Vodacom did eventually drop their prices by which time the thread had long since derailed. While not being the stellar discount you were expecting, it was a price drop none the less so I decided the thread had exceeded its usefulness, besides which people were already discussing the discounts in the associated news articles.

Yeah but why close the thread though?
I mean, If someone posts "OOB is expensive" and vodacom makes it 15% cheaper, does that mean the thread must be locked and nobody is allowed to post anything further, end of discussion?

isn't denying people to discuss stuff going against the whole idea of a Forum?

Regardless, it is my opinion that the thread in question should have been closed after VodacomData answered your question.

Well that is just proving my point really - why end a discussion if other people might have something to add?
over 1400 posts were added after that.... clearly other people have an opinion too?

You yourself posted over 30 times in it :erm:

All i'm saying is don't moderate us to death, this is a forum, and our discussions are essentially what make this place worth visiting.
No Discussions = No Forum.

Morkhans, correct me if I'm wrong, but Keeper could ask you to open it again?

Don't give him any ideas. ;)

I think we both agree a forum is the place to discuss topics, but we seem to disagree on what actually constitutes meaningful discussion. I don't care for rants and people who can't bring their point across without insults and expletives.

Of those 1400 posts how much is actually
a) on topic
b) engaging debate
c) rants and expletives
d) something that hasn't already been said

There was nothing more to be added to that thread. The original question had been answered and the discussion had moved on to the threads associated with the articles announcing the price drop.

If you don't want to be moderated, post thought out and engaging posts, stay on topic and keep it civil.
