Why do people not understand traffic circles

If you want to turn left or go straight you stay in the outer ring. If you want to exit right then you use the middle ring. I don't get how this is difficult?

Also you put your left indicator on if you're taking 1st exit (left), no indicator if you're taking the 2nd exit (straight), and right indicator if you're taking the 3rd exit (right). I see so many people who don't know how to use their indicators correctly in a traffic circle. Some people will actually indicate when they're leaving the circle.

Yup, exactly wrong. There is a little sign that shows a 'give way to right' on it, not a four way stop sign. If a 80km/h sign is posted on a highway do you still drive 120km/h because it is a big road?

ie The same as a 4 way stop.

My worst is when people wont let you get in to the circle. You approach the circle and some one is already in the circle, so you stop and let them go, then some one else approaches the circle from the direction of the other car and just carries on going, and so on. After about a year you get to go.

That's exactly how it's supposed to work. You have to yield to traffic coming from the right, no matter how long you have to wait.

Yup. Whenever I approach a traffic circle I look to my right and if there are no cars I just go. Had quite a few near accidents before when some guy on my left tries to pull out in front of me. Fscking morons!!!!

In SA there are two types of traffic circles: a mini-circle and a roundabout. (The roundabout, however, is still called a ‘traffic circle’ and often still shows the old traffic circle sign, which is now called a mini-circle sign. So that kicks off the confusion before anything else!)

But if we consider the situation carefully, it is not all that confusing.

The key thing to appreciate is that: there are two types of traffic circles, and the rules are different for each kind of traffic circle.

A mini-circle is very similar to a 4-Way Stop, with similar rules, except the Stop intersection has Stop lines and the Mini-circle intersection has Yield lines. With both these types of intersections the driver must give way to any other vehicle that reaches/crosses such a line before him.

To Turn Left (taking the first exit)

* signal left and approach in the left-hand lane
* keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signaling left to leave.

To go straight on (taking the second exit)

* select the appropriate lane on approach to and on the roundabout. If no marking on the road it is usually safest to keep to the left lane
* stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
* signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.

To Turn Right (taking the last exit or third exit )

* signal right and approach in the right-hand lane
* keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
* signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.

It does seem those throwing hissy fits might actually not know what they're talking about.

Yeah... Dunno how many times I've nearly been taken out by some yahoo trying to take the 2nd exit (i.e. go straight) from the inner lane around a circle when I'm trying to do the same.

Keep left unless you're planning on going 270 degrees 'round. I really don't see why that's so hard...

Lol... I started reading this thread thinking omg I've been doing it all wrong... But now with some peoples googling I'm actually doing it all right
mini circles as 4 way stops.
big circles as yield to right and I indicate where I'm going before and indicate left when I'm going to exit...
