Why do we have Affirmative Action?

In that case it shouldn't be hard for you to use the same stats the HR Practitioner used to support you argument. In fact I will give you even more room by saying using any statistics that shows the adverse effects of AA on white males. I want to see a direct link between AA and white male unemployment. Please!

they immigrate cause they dont feel like wasting their time in a banana republic

I find it quite funny that you so strongly support this AA talentedone, think about it as long as there is AA you will never get the proper respect no matter how well you do your job or how much better than anyone else. there will always be the AA (the real reason you got your job) hanging over your head. The idea of AA is not all that bad but it is terribly flawed and ppl are taking full advantage so all you get left with is poor service delivery and reduced standards, AA is in no way benefiting the poor, the rich blacks are becoming extremely rich by exploiting this and actualy making things worse for their own ppl.

Im sorry but something that only benefits a certain group will never have positive results.

talentedone - You are an idiot.

In our company, we try to implement AA so that our racial ratios are acceptable, to be able to get government contracts.

The problem is, there are usually no AA candidates that can do the specialized work, so we can't get our "ratio" to be acceptable, so we are screwed. We even have a recruitment panel that is racially mixed, to make everything as fair as possible.

Sometimes when we do find a AA candidate who might be able to do the work, then they insist on much bigger salaries than others in the company, so we can't employ them.

AA doesn't work. It gives a few lazy people the freedom to do nothing and get paid alot for it too. Handing people things is not a very good idea. You are teaching them that life is easy. It is not.

"Affirmative action ensures that qualified people from designated groups have equal opportunities in the workplace."
...
...
Affirmative action makes sure that qualified designated groups (black people, women and people with disabilities) have equal opportunities to get a job.
If that was the case, then I'm all for it! The problem is the first little part of your speech you didn't highlight and I kindly did for you now.

Qualified people are not getting the jobs. If you fall into the "designated groups" You get the job even If there is somebody more experienced and more qualified that you. 60% of these who get the jobs, never last very long and move to other companies with more pay very quickly costing companies more money in training again as they now have to bring another under quailfied person up to speed. That is where I have a problem with AA.

Your company is relying on the government for work, that is the single biggest mistake they can make. Why don't you guys change your focus to the private sector? Maybe overseas companies that are in no way affected by AA...

Actually its purchased.
At a price they say is what its worth. I know of a company (Owned by a person of indian origin) who was approached by the ANC womens league, and were told that they would be buying part of the company for a 10th of what it was worth. If the said comapany refused to take the offer, they had contacts which would make sure that said company never got another government contracts again.

Yeah BEE is working just great!

:D We don't rely on the government for most of our work - sorry, my post wasn't very clear. For our industry, our company needs to be backed my the government to be looked at favorably by international clients (private or government).
