Why do you eat out?

To give my wife a bit of a break. We do not have a maid, and she does all the cooking and cleaning and deserves not too cook every now and then.

I like good food.

I hate cooking :D

Good food doesn't include your everyday fast food joint or Spur/Dros (same thing really).

Take what you would pay at an "Eat Out" halve it. Go shopping with that amount of money to buy ingredients.

Involve the family to make one course each.

Eat and drink like a Lord and don't worry about driving home.

We regularly have meals like that at home that would cost a small fortune at restaurants.

Have you ever made a pizza at home? It costs basically the same if you buy the same ingredients. The restaurants must clearly get some massive bulk discounts on the products.

steaks and burgers are mostly down to the equipment used ...like you can never get nandos at home

yet you have the boiled chicken and the bottled sauce

but those flame grills are needed

KFC is a different story

but most burger places also use the different grillers

Exactly. And KFC has that awesome puss-filled breast that you so rarely nail yourself at home. :D

Spur with friends who also have kids because they can be left to run rampant

Exactly why we stopped going to Spur.

hahahaha ...can always stuff it with mustard :p

i have a

and steaks come out just as good as you would get at a resturant

If you're trying to suggest that buying the ingredients costs as much as eating pizza at a restaurant then you must be eating some really cheap pizza.

I eat out very little. Generally, the quality of what I can make at home is better than what I will get in a local restaurant, at 1/5th (or less) of the cost.

If I do eat out it'll be either to take the family out for a treat to Spur or something, or to have a date with mrsc, or to be with friends - on very rare occasions. There are a number of restaurants in the area I'm jonesing to try out as well though just to experience the world class food they have, but that will be a major treat for me.

Exactly why we stopped going to Spur.

And the reason we only go to a specific one now. For various reasons, the kids at this specific one are seemingly well-behaved.

Hm I made a set of 5 pizzas from scratch the other day. The most expensive ingredient was the mozzarella cheese. I think if I cost it out, the price of all 5 would have equaled 1 large Romans pizza. Making the crust from scratch was a revelation - so much lighter and fresher than I've had before.

R60 for 5 pizzas? Tell me where to buy the ingredients please. Normally that's just the price of the (guessing the weight here) 2x300g cheese blocks. Salami is about R50 for a small uncut roll, or whatever you call it.

I make pizza myself as well but I don't go as far as to make my own dough but instead by the "vetkoek" variety at the local Spar which is like R10.

The secret is in the tomato sauce for the base which you can make it bulk and freeze to use again later.

And you only put the best ingredients on, cheese, rocket, ham/salami and mushrooms.

Like you say it's cheap and it's pure magic.

I don't think he is quite going size for size with those 5 pizzas but I might be wrong.

I know the ones I make definitely aren't quite the same size mostly because I make them in a rectangle with a normal baking tray. (Well I say I but my wife does more of the work when it comes to homemade pizza).

It is a quality over cost argument though as it's much better tasting while also being cheaper.

However that's compared to Romans.

If I have to gauge home made against Col'Cacchio then there's would be as good as it gets.

I prefer Romans to Colcacchio's in taste anyway.

I eat out because of my friends. Whenever i met with my friends we go for lunch or dinner.

Mainly due to my upbringing I don't eat out a lot, but I do notice that a lot of people do. I'm curious why.

Is it because:
You are too busy, so don't have enough time to cook?
Restaurant food tastes better?
More convenient?
Too lazy?
Just go-along with friends/family?

Why do you care? Must we convince you why you must start eating out more?!

Hm maybe more like the cost of 2 Romans pizzas then, so roughly R100 in total I reckon. I used a R30 block of mozzarella 50% with cheddar, so cheese cost was probably R50. Then I used all ingredients I had at hand - caramelized a few onions, a small amount of feta, homemade pesto from garden basil, a couple of tomatoes, a tin of tomatoes, some yeast and flour, a chicken breast, and some other herbs and spices. I doubt it broke r100.

Give it a try, I was really impressed :)

OK. But you had to buy those "at hand" ingredients at some point. So you gotta include them in the price too. Normally we buy them all at payday since they're finished. And for 2 pizza's, R30 worth of cheese won't be enough. Bacon and mushrooms are about R45-R50 together, depending on bacon weight and where you buy. Tomato paste is over R25 if I'm not mistaken.

Add it all up and it's a bit more than R100 for 2 pizza's at home.

What do you pay for bases? Can't remember, like R20 for 2? Maybe R15?
