Why do you eat out?

OK. But you had to buy those "at hand" ingredients at some point. So you gotta include them in the price too.
I did include them, check. Tin tomatoes, a couple tomatoes, a few onions, some butter, basil which is free from the garden, some olive oil, a chicken breast, etc. I don't think Romans pizza is expensive actually and sometimes I do get it, but compared costwise it's definitely higher, and compared taste-wise frankly there's no comparison with what I can do myself.

Tomato paste is over R25 if I'm not mistaken.
/pleugh

As sauronza said, I make my own base and it's a world of difference from tomato paste. A batch of sauce will do 5 or 6 pizzas.

What do you pay for bases? Can't remember, like R20 for 2? Maybe R15?
Flour plus yeast and sugar? Maybe R10 total.

My home is for entertaining family & friends.

So, if I have to entertain someone who doesn't fall into the category of "friend", I take them to a restaurant.

And for 2 pizza's, R30 worth of cheese won't be enough. Bacon and mushrooms are about R45-R50 together, depending on bacon weight and where you buy. Tomato paste is over R25 if I'm not mistaken.

Add it all up and it's a bit more than R100 for 2 pizza's at home.

Nee man it's like R9.99 for tomato paste.

And you MAKE the base.

Using those pre-made ones you might as well just go get the take aways.

R10 worth of dough makes you two massive over trays full of pizza.

And if you make it completely from scratch, as in your own dough from yeast then it's even cheaper.

I have no friggin clue how to make any of that stuff from scratch.

The aim is convenience and cost - thus if it gets too inconvenient, like making that myself, I'll just go to the bloody Romans and buy it anyway.

I eat out fairly often because I can never hope to match the quality and creativity of a professional chef at home, and time. Not to mention that for some meals, e.g. good quality fillet, crayfish, etc you can't buy the ingredients for a huge amount less (<50%) than a restaurant so you may as well let an expert do it justice.

The aim isn't convenience and cost. An aim might be that. My aim, and sauron's apparently, is to have the best bloody pizza you can have, at the same cost or below the junk you can get from an average takeaway pizza shop.

Ha ha.

You do realise it can also be fun doing the cooking?

If you don't enjoy cooking then no it wont work for you.

The how is just a Google away.

Have you ever made a pizza at home? It costs basically the same if you buy the same ingredients. The restaurants must clearly get some massive bulk discounts on the products.

I consider pizza a take away not an eat out. But I am pretty sure that you can make a home made pizza for half the price charged at take away joints. (And with less salt).

One of the items that makes Eating Out expensive is drinks. The mark up is ludicrous.

Mainly due to my upbringing I don't eat out a lot, but I do notice that a lot of people do. I'm curious why.

Is it because:
You are too busy, so don't have enough time to cook?
Restaurant food tastes better?
More convenient?
Too lazy?
Just go-along with friends/family?

Not gonna cook just for myself. Simple as that.

not always ....

i have many experiences where food tastes schit and the portions are small

at home ...i dont think i have ever had that experience

but i eat out cause like camikaze said ..its a change of scenery and also its social and well saves you the work of cooking

Please tell me where you go for small portions? Most places put way too much food on a plate.

Well if you don't have a wood fired clay oven I'm afraid that's just not going to be possible at home for pizza, you'd always loose out on flavour,so you'd be settling for the next best thing but not the best.

Wife cooking is shyte.

Lol if she finds this thread, you're dead.:p

I've never eaten anything at a restaurant that I can make taste "exactly the same" at home.

I've made my own burgers, they never taste exactly like Spur's, neither do my steaks, and my pizza certainly doesn't taste the same as any restaurant's.

If my steaks were anything like Spur's, I'd change my butchery immediately.
