Why do you eat out?

The R50 will exclude the sides, cost of preparation of the meat and sides, cost of staff to cook the food, waitor, etc.....

Apart from the electricity/gas, and the sides, all those costs are irrelevant to a home cook. Then you have to take overpriced wine (R25/glass+) and tips into account.

Everyday for the last 2 years.

Don't you ever crave a home cooked meal?

There's something lacking in restaurant food for me. You eat it, but it's like something deep in your soul doesn't get satisfied. Don't you ever have that?

I think part of the food tasting better when someone else cooked it thing is because you slaved over it yourself. You sniff all the ingredients and taste as you're cooking, so by the time you're done, your taste buds are not impressed. I find that I tend to enjoy my cooking more the next day.

I'm pretty good at duplicating what I eat at a restaurant at home, but yes it never quite tastes the same. I only ever eat out with friends which I've limited, especially after reading an article a few years ago about the shocking state of some restaurants.

One of the quickest ways to think twice about eating out is to visit the restaurant kitchens ...

A 250g fillet will cost you about R130 - R150 in a decent restaurant, and fillet does not cost anywhere near R500 - R600 / kg. The cost of the meat should be less than R50 if you buy it yourself.

Agreed.

It costs me R109 per kg for Sirloin for top quality meat.

For that kind of money I would rather buy all the meat and invite friends over for a braai than go have a steak in a restaurant.

But even so I still end up going to restaurants just for the other benefits and sometimes their meat is ever so slightly better than mine.

I prefer eating at home.

I've seen plenty restaurant kitchens and staff over my years in insurance and I prefer not to have my food from there.

I can't remember all the times I have felt sick, not enjoyed or had jippo guts from a fortunes worth of food.

Yes a very big generalization here but in general home cooking is preferred and especially when prepared by myself and AEG does the dishes.

I'm not looking for convincing. I was raised with the idea that restaurant food is not proper food and is a waste of money. I realize that's not necessarily true. But I would like to understand why so many people eat out.

There are restaurants and there are restaurants. That's actually also part of the attraction for me - trying out a lot of restaurants to find the gems. I find that non-chain neighborhood restaurants that are not too trendy is where you tend to get the best quality meals at a reasonable price.

Snap :)

When I was a bachelor (as opposed to a divorcee) we had a canteen at work, with a free three course meal every day. It was fantastic - my grocery bills were mostly cleaning stuff and a loaf or two of bread. But by the time lunch on a Monday came around, I was starving.

I see what you have done there sir ;)

There is a balance

We used to eat out a lot but it became so commonplace that we got used to it... and a major money drain.

Now we eat out either because of time issues (late etc) or because we want to make an occasion.
We don't waste our money at franchises, I can make that food at home... if we eat out then it must be a nice place, something different with really good food that you can't just make at home.

In any case, going to a nice restaurant on occasion means I can eat what I really like. At home I have to cook what OH likes. I'm not cooking separate meals, no way. For instance, I like "blue" ostich fillet with a dash of balsamic vinegar. He doesn't like rare meat, but ostrich has to be underdone, otherwise it is leathery.

Agree, and actually, I have no problem going out for a franchise meal every once in a while either. We will even eat at McDonalds like once a month or so. But because the vast majority of what we eat is homemade, even that feels like a treat and not like gluttony. And going out to a restaurant really means something for us.

We don't have children, so we generally don't go to Spur etc, because there are too many running around. In any case, last time a child at the adjoining table biffed my OH on the head with a balloon, and he stormed out and we haven't been back. Don't like the food anyway.

Sorry for the low standards of food that you satisfy yourself with.

You've either got a great Spur or your standards aren't all that high. :)

Damn you must've had some awful experiences at Spur, guys.

The one in Centurion makes it just right every time. And I swear it's even bigger than 500 grams.

Where have you eaten that's better?
