Why do you eat out?

Damn you must've had some awful experiences at Spur, guys.

The one in Centurion makes it just right every time. And I swear it's even bigger than 500 grams.

Where have you eaten that's better?

It's very easy to make a better steak than any Spur. Use fresh butter+olive oil, thyme and garlic on a searing hot fire, and serve it with a red wine reduction or a mushroom and cream sauce, or a peppercorn brandy sauce, or chimichurri, or any number of other sauces.

A shorter list would be where have I eaten that's worse…

We don't like eating out. We like eating and entertaining at home. Have friends over etc.
If we do eat somewhere, it's usually for breakfast and even then it's more for the coffee, than for the food.

Not hard to make a steak better than Spur

At home you make it exactly how you like it and you don't have to cook 100 steaks.

I don't have that, so there's some truth - although I think I compensated by the quality of the dough and the homemade base and toppings, which were miles ahead of the level of effort you'll get in a restaurant.

I was quite impressed by the Pizza Perfect in Lenasia,I don't know if all the branches do it the same way but they make it in front of you and put some effort and care in it.Then they pop it into a clay oven pizza right in front of you also,I really enjoyed it.

Even one example would be nice.

Better steaks in PE? Squires, StageDoor, Mangiamo - they also make decent pizza, Zorba's, Two Olives…

Nee *** man.

I want to say I've never had anything worse than Spur when it comes to steak, but I'm sure I've just blocked out those memories.

They aren't too bad when it comes to chicken wings or that hickory basted rib, but that's the sauce hiding the actual meat taste.

Let me guess, you have your steak done to super done with a ton of sauce?

That's not steak, that's charcoal and will always taste equally **** no matter who makes it or where it comes from.

I once, and only once, had a decent steak at spur. Was just after 10am after a meeting in PTA. We asked the waitress nicely for the biggest steaks she could find and the guy in the kitchen, bless his kind soul, brought his A game. Was awesome and huge!

But that only happened once and generally Spur's food serves as a reminder as to why kids are a bad idea.

There you have it. Your dad was a miser, like mine (Scots descent). Throw off the yoke of paternal oppression and take your honey to dinner.

No I think he was just an old fashioned African male. My mom cooked every single day, because dad didn't like take out or eating out. We were also never allowed to go to the movies, because only prostitutes and vagabonds spent time at the movies we were told. Where they got these ideas from I'lI never know.

I can cook thanks to maternal oppression.

You sound like you grew up in a similar household to mine :) my ear got pinched every time I didn't help mom out in the kitchen. And she would tell me she was training me, so my husband wouldn't one day come complain to them about my bad cooking.

My main two reasons are:
1. Lack of time during the week to cook &
2. Celebrating something or just for our enjoyment (especially on weekends).

I'd prefer to have home cooked food during the week & only eat at restaurants on weekends, because the food we get is usually too rich & it gets expensive. But I can't manage to cook every single day of the week, due to work (often bring work home), studying & a small baby to look after (no nanny). I'd imagine a lot of young families where both parents work are the same. Those Woolies meals & meats that you just pop in the oven & can serve with a salad are all I can manage these days. I usually don't even have energy or time to cook frozen veg anymore.
