Why does my fibre speed increase during loadshedding?

I have a Vodacom Fibre with Metrofibre plan that is supposed to give me 250mbps, but I usually only get 90-100mbps when I do speed tests. However, when there is loadshedding and I’m on my UPS, the fibre speed goes over 250mbps. This happens consistently every time there is a power outage. What could be the cause of this? Is it something to do with the network congestion or interference? How can I get the full speed of my plan even when there is no loadshedding?

Typically the FTTH infrastructure (usually over GPON) is oversubscribed i.e. more subscribers than capacity - this is formally marketed as contention.

My assumption is that people don't have power backup at home, and they basically "free-up" the capacity when the power goes out, allowing you to enjoy more bandwidth.

Is this on wifi or cable?

Well, fair point, assuming everyone else's wifi devices are off and not causing interfere I guess.

I've not noticed any difference in that regard though.

MFN don't oversubscribe areas to this degree, at least not on their new builds in the last few years.

I wonder if OP is in an early MFN build area.

I endured RSAweb for 12 months. put up with the indifferent speeds, excuses, no respond to tickets. Cool Ideas does everything right so far. I pay for a 200 mbps service and usually get 220 mbps at least

The OP is using Vodacom. That gives you your answer, you should not need to work it out

I live in kyalami, and have been an MFN subscriber, since the early days speed stays the same all the time.

Other FNOs limit to the ordered speeds

Incorrect - the most likely reason you may not be getting 1000Mbps is most likely due to the limitations of your hardware: processor and platform capabilities are the top of the list
