Why does win10 use HDD 100% these days?

It seems related to the bug that causes freezes but still being able to move the mouse, this happens even on SSD machines.

There are hundreds of fraudulent "solved" threads that copy paste from each other that does not actually solve the problem.

Using an SSD is not a fix as it is expensive and this same bug will wear out any SSD before it's time.

I am now literally having this problem on almost every win10 PC I get into contact with post last years versions. Even my i7 is starting to chug just browsing files.

Is this big brother software that got greedy and trying to index the whole HDD? What?
 
Are these laptops?
If so it's caused by Windows Defender.
Just search for Windows Defender High Disk Usage or High CPU usage to resolve it. There's a bunch of tutorials.

I'd start by checking what's using your resources in that way. Stop any and all services you won't need and restart and see if that fixes things.
I have an SSD in my work laptop (one in my gaming laptop at home) and neither shows 100%. My work laptop spiked to 13% because I opened Task Manager.
I have also found a lot of the "fixes" on the Internet are tripe. Prefer taking advice from the official Microsoft forums.
Also check your HDD firmware and see if you can't upgrade it (backup your data before doing so, or follow manufacturer guidelines on that).

If it's just read, it won't wear out the SSD any time soon. Most modern SSD will probably outlast the rest of your system by quite a bit before you hit their max write.

How much RAM do you have? Incessant writing usually means you're constantly dumping to the page file.

Only one is a laptop, they are running an assortment of different AV's with only one running defender.... it also happens to be the slowest one.

The only common denominator is win10

Sometimes it maxes out read.... then it maxes out write. I already disabled auto-defrag..... I remember a defrag bug killing HDD's with constant writes that M$ just can't seem to fix.

8GB RAM on the current one, had to restart it to get a semblance of control back.... Should I increase the pagefile?
 
Only time I've experienced this was on work computers with antivirus scans scheduled (Norton or McAfee), bringing all work to a screeching halt for most of every Wednesday.
 
It doesn't use 100% on any of the eight systems in my household. All is normal.
All except one are on 21H1. All on Win 10 Pro.
I strongly suspect the issue lies with your particular machine's configuration, probably a crappy driver or firmware in one or other device.

Shouldn't be necessary if Windows automatically scales the page file.

Do not disable auto defrag, you're going to make the HDD seek more due to fragmentation down the line.
And no, HDD were never "killed" by it, just SSD write wear-down as they don't really need it, and that's been fixed ages ago.

Just remove the AV from all of them and use only Windows Defender and see how it goes. Multiple AV are bad, it's probably the first thing I fix up on most people's machines.

Well.... a few people have reported it came back for them.

Each machine only has one AV installed, defender disables itself in that case.

And one that has the problem only has defender running.

Check resource monitor > Disk and see what's using it.

Win11 is just gonna get larger.... everything below 500GB is just too small for long term.

And I am going at this rate to have to buy 5-7 of the buggars.... I don't have that just lying around.
