Why have kids?

Well, i would teach them all the basic values of respect, kindness, forgiveness, humility etc. That's basic human qualities and goes a long way. Even if they do just that, it would be great. Other efforts like joining philanthropic organisations. I myself, would like to join an organisation of such someday. Small things go a long way.

Ok, but how does that make the earth a better place? The nett impact of a person on the earth (even a very "good" person) is not a positive impact.

I don't want to turn this into a debate. I've said even on a small scale things can change. Even if it's a small effort.

So in other words, your kids will still **** up the planet, just less so than some other, less conscious, kids. Got it ;)

*edit* sorry, I realise the above sounds pretty damn self righteous. Just trying to make a point.

Now I'm confused. Are some people trying to save the planet for a future generation that they will not be siring? If so, why bother saving it at all?

For every other being on this planet, for the ecosystem itself. Anthropocentrism will be the downfall of us all.

Agree 100%. I can't stand children. Didn't even like them when I was a kid myself.

Always running around, screaming, crying, talking gibberish, looking for attention... They're like little mini-Malemas basically.

Legend :D

Just my comment from my side on this matter. I also had the same question: Why should i have kids? And we could not when we eventually tried for it. And then 7 years after that i was blessed with boy. Today he is 11 years old.

My attitude towards kids have totally changed. I will do anything for kids.!!

Remember this: You do not know what love is, until you have your own children.

Even if we wanted to have, we can't anymore:
1) I've had a vasectomy
2) My wife recently had to have a hysterectomy

But let me state this; we felt this way at 24, 30, 35, 40 and we still feel this way (even more so).

We love our cats, they are our children.
Why do you have cats? It's not like they chose you to be their owner.

What if you groom your kids to be more focussed on fixing a large scale problem? Either to be activists, conservationists, researchers and scientists working on green solutions etc...? What if your child was going to be the one to contribute the missing piece of the puzzle, to some fantastic renewable, green energy source? And your child not being there means that the contribution comes from someone else 10 years further on. But in those 10 years the world is thrown over the point of no return?

A far fetched scenario, but it is one to consider. Anyway, I would much rather have someone procreate, who is globally conscious to the point of not wanting kids, due to the possible negative impact; Than have someone procreate for the ****s and giggles of raising a child. At least the former would have a chance of raising a kid that could contribute to the saving of our home.

And as I have said before, if all of the people that are educated enough to realize what our rising population is doing to the planet; simply stop having kids in order to balance the scales with the impoverished that pop them out like candy. Then in 50 years we will have a global generation of under-educated and overbreeding people, starving and bumbling through life.
As the saying goes, that is like cutting off the nose to spite the face.

Adoption?

Adoption?

No thanks, I want to look after and groom something that has my own genes thanks. Adoption is not something I wouldn't do unless it turns out that me and the wife cannot have kids of our own.
Even then, Adoption is a last resort.

Just like kids is not for some people, adoption is not for me.

Fair enough - but every point raised in your post above could be addressed by adopting. If anything it would double the benefits you mentioned by taking a child that would otherwise end up poor and uneducated and allowing him/her to become affluent and educated.

instinct, media, sociology, delusions, addiction

I like what garry said at the top of this page

Why do you want kids? Or why did you have them?

Look around you, the world is in a mess. Isn't 7 billion people enough? The world has non stop wars, famine, unemployment and homelessness. This does not compute.

Do you just want to make "copies" of yourself to show other people you can?

I see people around me every day that have no time for themselves and very little time for their children. Shouldn't you be enjoying life instead of worrying constantly about others?

To pass on genetic material and to care for you in your old age. Its only natural when you become older

I'll be adopting a few babies in the not too distant future. There's just too many people in the world for me to make more.
