Why is asterisk better?

I dont know alot about asterisk.
Can someone tell me why asterisk is better than an IP PBX Solution?

Ive read about Asterisk @ Home and i see that trixbox was formerly asterisk @home. Is there a difference in the two packages or is there only a name change?

Hi, I use Asterisk in my business every day it is our only PBX system (replaced the Samsung), has about 50 exten. and counting.

Asterisk is a IP Pbx system that that has a long list of features, some useable some not.

Asterisk is a fully capable PBX. There are some awesome applications around that make use of Asterisk, and many of these are provided by South African companies. I use asterisk extensively.

Skype is a nice and easy voip client... but in a company, where you need a managed PBX system - where all calls can be audited and every phone has got individual rights and allowed and disallowed - then Asterisk (trixbox) Asterisk has voicemail, conferencing, IAX (linking to another asterisk server), Do-Not-Disturb, Call-forward ...ad nauseum..

I agree totally, Skype is great for the office who needs basic branch-to-branch calling, because it can only make one branch-to-branch call at a time. I will need some "stronger" voip and PBX solution for my bigger clients though. Asterisk sounds like obvious choice.

Any suggestions on VOIP providers? How many concurrent voip calls can you make with a 512 ADSL?

ADSL512 is the downlink speed.... not the uplink..
Depending on what compression codec is used, I would thumbsuck 10Kbytes/sec per call ... (plz dont quote me... just what I have seen on my router during a call)
