Why is every iphone named iphone?

I seem to recall it takes the first name from the Apple ID and then attaches ‘s iPhone at the end much like it does with MacBooks.

Are these maybe MDM iPhones? The answer might lie in there and then it’s the IT staff’s fault.

It could also be they’ve turned on the Private Address function and that’s camouflaging the name or the software is taking the MAC address and just identifying it as such.

In my experience you just see the MAC address and no identifier.

The worst is the tossers change their Mac everytime they connect to wifi

Then there’s your answer.

People aren’t naming it iPhone, your scanning software is due to the MAC address randomising.

Default name for iPhone would be “Someone’s iPhone”.

I looked this up and it says that if you reset the networking settings it changes the name to iPhone.

I'm looking at the name offered to DHCP - some are just iPhone and iPad while others are as you say “Someone’s iPhone/iPad”.

Aah that’s interesting and I could believe it.

Will test it on my work iPad when I remember.

Wouldn’t be surprised if people got some troubleshooting info to try that and didn’t know it does that.

That being said I’ve used the network reset a few times over the years and never picked this up.

People who's life revolves around their phone, change the name, change the way your battery indicator or clock looks etc. iPhone users just want something that work....... every time. I cant be bothered what name my phone has or anything else for that matter. You will see most Iphone users message tone also is the default. OK here I might be wrong, maybe you cant even change it, never bothered to look if you can.

I would have expected it to say iPhone 13 Pro Max Ultra thin Real Feel 4k +

If you figure out how to change the ring tone use this one:

Very interest the Network Reset does indeed change it to iPhone.

This is definitely a newish thing as I don’t recall seeing this happen before.

At least iPhone users don’t feel the need to indicate how many cameras and what phone they have on every single photo they take…
