Why MTN dislikes WhatsApp

PS, 99% of my Whatsapp messages are via wifi (Telkom for free) anyway so don't need their crappy network anyway.

Same thing people were saying in 2009. "Cant use Whatsapp b'coz it chows data. And what about my free sms's?"

I would love to actually just not use WhatsApp anymore, but problem is guys for hookups on the net only WhatsApp. But trying my best to switch them hookup by hookup. You switch ... you get a shag. :D

Can we see a graph of how much their data revenue has increased over the same period as we are missing half the picture.

I have started telling everybody we chat to that we are switching to Telegram. Adding that where we are - we aren't really able to use Whatsapp. When they ask "where are you" I reply: IN 2015 BIYACH!

I'm on MTN; I get better call quality on WhatsApp than on network (and they don't get dropped)

Speaking of which, MTN just phoned me (i'm feeling rather suspicious now) that my contract can be upgraded from 1 Nov ....it only expires in March 2016 ..so looks like i can upgrade 5 months in advance now , normally it was only 3 months....is MTN getting desperate?

it depends on the value of the contract.

It seems that MTN want to have their cake and eat it to. As a subscriber I pay for data when using WhatsApp or I pay for a SMS. The whole App ecosystem is built on the premise the the App supplier can make revenue from the App and the network from the data consumption. In this case the cost charged for an SMS is just so much higher than the data cost for the same message, so it has MTN upset. If they wish to enter the App messaging space, figure out how to monetise it, then the playing field is open.
