Why MTN dislikes WhatsApp

If you pay for data then its your choice on how you spend it.
Also at the exorbitant prices that are charged for data my heart pumps lumpy custard.
The cell operators made billions out of us for all these years and now they complain.
Sounds like sour grapes because of shrinking bottom lines.

I think they should block Whatsapp

its the quickest way for CellC and Telkom Mobile to get a significant market share.

really MTN?? (and in that mind MYBB?)
bringing up an article about SMS vs data in this day and age..

50cents per sms ( 160 characters or 1280 bytes)

that is 40c per KiloByte , R409 per Mbyte , R419,430.4 per Gbyte.

i am actually amazed that people still believe in using SMS's :o

I only use sms to reply to Hellkom's messages and rate them 0/10 after closing my tickets without fixing my problems

They complain about sms decline, but I'm sure data growth should be making up for it. Stop complaining emptyn

9 of ten messages goes via whatapp. so :p mtn

Text messages (sms) was free, until these corporations figured out they could milk the customer for more moola. I hope MTN blocks whatsapp. They will leave customers faster than the ANC is loosing support.

So MTN are crying because they were all charging too much for SMS to begin with and now people dont want to use it?
such sad, many cry.

Even if sms cost 1c per message I'd still use Whatsapp - it's a much nicer service to use.

WhatsApp is free so they are also not making a cent from me.

Edit: I'm also on CellC so the data used by WhatsApp is also free.

Or is it? Is there not a thread in Cell C section complaining that WhatsApp data is getting deducted from normal bundles? Or did i misread?

I can imagine. Especially with being able to send pics and vids. With WhatsApp perhaps not so much because from what I understand it compresses the pics and vids and sends it in low quality. Telegram on the otherhand sends the original file. Be it 500kb or 5meg or 600meg.

Next they will complain that Amazon and Takealot are using their network to sell all these good without giving them a slice of the pie :erm:

Don't worry MTN, I guess I won't even move my one expiring contract over to prepaid, I'll just let it die, since I don't want to inconvenience you by buying data bundles and using whatsapp.

Vodacom will thus be the only one getting my money...

The network was asked follow-up questions to establish why Nyati believes WhatsApp should be investigated, but MTN did not provide further comment.
They are too busy wiping egg off their face to answer the public's questions.

How much have they lost in "Please Call Me" Ad revenue too?

I'm still not over the BS ads they play before you make an outgoing call, and that is on a contract phone too, the bloody cheek. I'm seriously moving next year, MTN is clearly run by morons.
