Why MTN dislikes WhatsApp

I really hate this term OTT. Everything is OTT, that's the very definition of the internet! It's a real cheek for a company like MTN to sell internet connectivity and then have the cheek to tell you what you can or can't do with your internet connection.

really MTN?? (and in that mind MYBB?)
bringing up an article about SMS vs data in this day and age..

50cents per sms ( 160 characters or 1280 bytes)

that is 40c per KiloByte , R409 per Mbyte , R419,430.4 per Gbyte.

i am actually amazed that people still believe in using SMS's :o

I think the question needed to asked to MTN is this.. 1st world countries experienced these kind of issues 2-3yrs prior.. Why did they not transform their business instead of trying to fight a battle they will never win unless there are some government level epic bribes in the way.

Now years later VoIP is coming in a form which will be prolific.. (It's been possible for the last 5yrs on my iPhones so yah). Will they transform their network to offer better value & upgrade their core so that they can reduce the cost such that they can make up loss by increased usage or continue scarcity model and harass regulator about net neutrality holding consumers randsom?

The reason why WhatsApp was started, is because the cellphone service providers was making a huge killing out of text messages! Now Mr Nyati, take that! It is called revenge!

Next someone will complain that Skype/Whatsapp is shrinking their voice revenue

They got R4.5 billion in 2014 :wtf: , they shouldn't be whining, they lucky they got anything for sms in 2014. Its like a company complaining its sales in dial up aren't doing too well.

Haven't the number of free SMSes increased since 2010?

I was looking at getting a P8 lite. When I went to MTN, the package included about 300mb, but 200 smses. What the hell would I do with 200 smses?

These days I (and I assume many people) only get smses from companies. All personal messages go through Whatsapp.

Just checked my WhatsApp stats and it says I've sent 872 messages. Doesn't give a timeframe which makes it a bit useless.

I think there are a hell a lot of people that don't know about whatsapp or have super cheap phones (not sure if all the phones now days support it).

WhatsApp is free so they are also not making a cent from me.

Edit: I'm also on CellC so the data used by WhatsApp is also free.
