Just got BF3 from ToysRUs for my son's birthday. It was obviously sealed.
The second disk is faulty and the game won't install. There are marks on the disk.

It cost R400 and now I have to waste time taking it back. I can't believe these guys. I know things can be faulty out the box but c'mon. R400 of game only to discover that you have to download 11 gigs to play it or return the disk for a replacement (I'm guessing they don't do refunds). How does a disk end up being scratched like that?

It's pretty standard for any multiplayer game to have updates :wtf:

Tell them the DVD was scratched when you opened it and you want a refund. BT Games has BF3 on special sometime soon for like R200.

it happens- sometimes the disk falls loose in the box and rattles around. Some retailers open the boxes when you buy it to make sure its okay. But so long as they are willing to replace it for you, its not a big deal.

It makes sense why stores refuse to exchange games.

For example you buy a game and use the cd key on origin and then if its faulty you want to return it but you have already used the key..... That is the most likely cause why they refuse to exchange discs.

Just a note to op that you already used the key on your origin account and I don't think its fair to demand a refund. I think its fair to demand new discs but not a refund cause the game is now on your origin account and its yours.

What you could do is get onto torrents and download disc 2 iso. Install disc 1 then mount disc 2 and install that.

Just disconnect from the internet to install the disc in offline mode then you can connect and do the updates. :-)

You should just have gotten it off origin in the first place.

I took it back, got a replacement without questions. They didn't even look at the invoice which I find odd. The new one I got was shrink-wrapped differently... suspicious. The new one is flawless and installs 2-3x quicker. So 11Gb install + 4Gb updates off the web. EISH.

The faulty disk was in a sleeve. It had been used before for sure - scratches and something on the disk surface.

BF3 did have some huge patches, did you get the expansion as well or was that part of download?

I myself had a run in with look and listen. Key was already used, they as well did exchange without even blinking. Just took it and swapped. These days I mostly shop digital and some titles retail, that normally I end up ordering from places like zapsgaming or takealot.

I'm not sure if the expansion is in there, but at 4Gb download + 2x dual layer DVD installs, I sure hope so :)
About the key - it's odd. We used the original key we got when we first installed. When we installed with the replacement disk, it didn't ask for the key. We have also done digital and I'm way happier knowing that I don't have to worry about faulty disks anymore, it's just that this thing is a behemoth and I guess we were impatient. After all is said and done though, the whole process probably took as long anyway... that said, I read about one or two poor sod's experiences with doing the download where they got through everything but it failed to install and they had to restart only to find it do the same thing... troubleshooting that kind of issue would kill it for me. The reason consoles still exist in the days of the PC.

The 4GB download was the expansion. You'll have to buy it before you can use it though, another R100. Also, if it just installed again using the original key from the disc you returned, then it sounds like you have an extra copy ;)

Lol, very sneaky! I think it'll be worth it though. The game looks epic! Re extra copy - yes! I wonder if I can pull that key from the registry, though I imagine it goes back into the pool when they send it back? Or perhaps it goes onto some ToysRUs employee's PC lol.

The number one reason I why I did not buy BF3 yet, to dammmmmmn big patches.
