Why so much rage ?

Until you think there's something wrong with your tyre and you open the door on a bike passing by...

IM a cyclist, (that's a whole other thread of hate) but it does make me VERY conscious of opening doors and switching lanes.

Well then that's your own stupidity for just swinging your door open without checking for traffic first.

Well that's where it's grey, not? Who's fault is it if your car has stalled and you need to push and now a bike comes through the gap when you least expect it? Blind spot and all that. Let's assume you looked behind you and just didn't see the bike.

Forget stupidity, let's talk law. If I'm lane splitting at 120 kph on the highway, is it legal?

Then you didn't look hard enough. This won't stand in an insurance claim or court of law.

I realise I sometimes ride my bike perhaps not as carefully as I ought to. But I also realise I'm for the most part invisible to cars, and even when I encounter people who go out of their way to get in my way or try beat me at a robot, etc. I just slow down and let it go. It's not a war; we're all just trying to get from A to B while staying alive, jesus...

Yes it is, as long as they are not breaking the speed limit.

Yet you say 'then you didn't look hard enough'? The person wasn't there seconds earlier when I made my decision.
I honestly can't see how these arrive alive guys can suggest it's legal when the law says "A motor cycle is a motor vehicle and the legislation prescribe the procedure for the overtaking of motor vehicles. Overtaking in the same lane is not allowed."

So.... are riders breaking the law by passing cars between two lanes of traffic?
That depends on the speed and the lanes.

Solid lines apply to all. Bikers forget that.
Also they should not drive on the line if the traffic is moving at a decent speed.
All of that is often ignored

Act paragraph and section for reference please?

There's a very good reason for still riding between lanes when traffic is moving... And that is the fact that when the chop looking at his whatsapp messages drives into the vehicle in front of him, if it's a car it's an annoyance, if it's a bike it's hospital, physio, permanent damage...

I was taught that lane splitting is only legal if the cars are slow and there is no solid line...

And there's the problem with the law.

The law is skewed toward motorcyclists, as it is to pedestrians unfortunately.

If the speed differential between the moving traffic and motorcyclist is greater than 20kph whilst lane splitting, then the motorcyclist was riding recklessly and could be liable for any damages or injuries incurred.
