Anyone else noticed that your general internet and email habits have remained the same, but your bandwidth use keeps growing? I am on Telkom's fastest ADSL with 9Gig included. A few years ago I used to find that 5Gig was sufficient. Now I still do the same things, and I regularly top 20Gig. Today I got cut off for hitting 40Gig (and that is the limit of their cap management tool). My use hasn't changed, but my bandwith (and internet bill) keeps growing! I used to have to top up by 1 or 2 GB per month. Now I get more cap but I have to top up by 10GB or 20GB per month, and it is costing me a fortune.
I do use youtube a lot and I find that youtube movies are bigger than ever before. In fact, all online content is bigger and takes more bandwidth than ever before. Websites are more media rich, online ads use more bandwidth, lots of sites have flash content, video clips and other bandwidth-hungry content. I get more junkmail than before, and many of the junk emails I get have attachments. Newsletters and email attachments are larger than before, on average. More people upload and download photos and videos on facebook and other sites. In short, 9GB of cap is just not enough for a high end user, and today's announcement that it will be 10Gig after the promotion (from 1 October) is laughable. To keep up, it should be increased to at least 30GB, with cap management up to 60GB or even 100GB per month. What's more, there should be a high end package which is uncapped, or capped at 50GB at least.
Telkom is not keeping up with the growing bandwidth requirements of the internet. I wonder if there are any benchmarks to measure this? Similar to the inflation "shopping basket" comparing the same products over time? There should be a standard "basket" of internet use, to measure how the bandwidth changes over time of the same websites, for example. Does anyone know of such a benchmark?
Also, does anyone know of an uncapped or very high cap unshaped ADSL service? At 4Mbps or faster. Sorry for the long post..
