Why you can't get maximum Telkom DSL speeds

So why can't I personally pay for and get thicker copper to my house?

Because telkom run a bundle of cables to a streetbox called a SDC, there are often 80 or 100 clients using the same cable bundle, this one runs back to the exchange (E-side) this you have no control of, you could probably argue that your V-side (the line from the SDC to your house) needs to be changed but in reality getting it done takes plenty of patience.

It took almost a year to persuade Telkom that my link to the SDC had been affected by the elements to the extent that the connection no longer performed to spec. It eventually ended up with 150m of cable being replaced to 18 clients and having a new local box fitted to the pole for my overhead line.

Not a single problem since then.

I did the same. Being kind a patient towards the technicians, usually ends up with better results.
 
Because I cant afford the unshaped data of a faster line, making it pointless to have a faster line. Rather have 2mb unshaped than 10mb heavily shaped and/or throttled.
 
So Telkom just confirmed that they are at fault, their copper is very old and probably was quite thin to start with.
 
So my comically outdated exchange cannot even give me close to the max speed of vanilla ADSL ?
 
The article does not explain why Telkom don't allow for speeds greater than 4mbps on the older ADSL.
 
Live less than a 1km from exchange, Telkom box is literally outside my house.

Still get 6Mbps on a 10Mbps line
 
This is all fine and well but why can one get say 80-90% on a 4MB line, then downgrade to a 2MB line and again only get around 60-80% on the 2MB line. Surely if it could manage close to 90% on a 4MB then a 2MB line should be humming away at near max speed except of course for the overhead.
 
Congestion.
Like a water pipe - the more people watering, showering etc, the less pressure you have.

In reality I think South Africans are a society that just want more and more. Lines speeds are proportional and a 2 meg lines is not in essence half the speed of a 4 meg line

Because we have been conditioned to struggle for everything we need. To compete in a modern economy, we need good internet connections. Telkom and the authorities' lethargy is like a wet blanket over the whole country. We cannot take it lying down.

Add all the other licensed network operators to your list...
 
The age of the copper also comes into play.

When we first got ADSL we were "2km" from the exchange according to their equipment.
When we finally gave up on it? they said we were 5km away.

Did you consider the transmission overhead?
