Like the other day I was at Metro Control (where they dispatch ambulances) and I couldn't make any calls (Vodacom) but people around me could.
Then when I went to Tygerberg hospital, say, 200M away, I could make calls but a lady on MTN couldn't (1 bar signal)

It's just hot spots... you can't actually blame BB for that!

Most cases its nothing to do with signal, BIS can be a very shoddy network, there are users here on MyBB on all networks reporting problems like that, the worst i heard so far was a guy who waited 36hours for a BBM to be delivered, he sent it as a test to he's mother, the phone was on and had full signal the enter time, message still never went through. He reports having trouble like that constantly, things like 7min to load a 24k webpage, and this is all with MTN, vodacoms not the worst, they the biggest so we hear more about it.

A friend was having trouble with her BB, i sent her a whatsapp message, we both had 100% signal and she was sitting next to me, too about 5min to get there, sent a message to another friend to find out if he was at work cuz i had something for him and was heading to the mall, he only got the message 40min later when i was standing next to him. I live in Somerset west, if your not actually on the mountain your signals flawless.

Never said there was anything wrong with a dumb phone or nokia, but dumb phones literally are the only thing worse than a berry, simply cause it lacks smarts.
If we referring to smart phones only then there is nothing bellow a berry.

fair or not bb days are numbered. I have bbs for the last 4 years and services where getting months by months. If it's not the network that is down, there's a software issue. I change over to android. I bought the netsufer dualbtouch, load a 250meg. That is for email and browsing which last me for the month. I don't miss my bb. Bbm? I have whatsapp. Sorted.
 
I find the exact opposite. My 9900 surfs fine, mails flow through at high speed and good reliability ( BIS and BES ), can do what I want with the phone while friends with Android don't get some mails until much later and gtalk is slow or buggy. The phone works well for me and what I want it for. Keyboard is a must as I receive a large amount of emails.

And I don't have to pay for a data bundle at all.
 
Then you get the brilliant brightsparks here in Grahamstown.

They install one cellphone tower. Great reception and speeds all around town. But then the town gets bigger. So they need another tower. Their logic?

"Well, the first one worked so well where it is, so lets put up another one a few metres next to it".

Great. Now anyone not standing below the actual towers has to keep their 3G dongles in a headband around their head in order to get 24kb/s on a 7.2Mb/s line.
 
Kosmik .. 1) on Vodacom and 2) Do you check your bill?

1) It appears to be Vodacom only - and unrelated to signal quality/strength. AS I say, Porsche has good reception around the area and I got a 3.66mbps down and 2.3mbps up - but the BB managed 0.08mbps down and timed out on the up. The ping was 20x more as well.

2) I've never checked my bill - but decided to the other night. Although they're small amount, I get an average of R15.00 added data charges aside from BIS. Highest was R50.00 extra and the lowest R1.50 - but they're always there. On my 2nd BB (generally switched off and unused), I turned it on in January to check MyBB, Facebook etc - and that was R12.00. If I take the R60.00 BIS and the R20.00 extra, I may as well get a data bundle on another smartphone?
 
I've already mentioned MTN and yes I do check my bill, no issues.

*edit* Not to mention Dstv 3G tv works well

What I did in 2 weeks to have a brilliant BlackBerry experience:

Googled. Why should I accept forum posts and internet comments that Vodacom, BB or BIS service sucks and just "live with it?"

I don't.

I've got a BB 9300 Curve 3G BB OS6 and Vocacom BIS.

Enter Setup>Scroll down to Personalization> Languages> Make sure only English is Selected> Scroll down, Save or Update and the BB asks you to delete all other Languages. This gave me an instant of more than 45Megs free Space on my BB.

Secondly> Go to your home screen and type memory, launch options> memory cleaning> enable the memory cleaning option temporarily> clean memory, disable the option and discard changes when going back.

Install Opera Mini if you need faster Browser access than the default BB Browser, great thing is that you will be redirected to any mobile version of a site as well if it is available (even mybb).

If you have had your BB for a while, you could enter the Email Options and press the Menu button when you see your mail account and resend Service Books. Advanced Settings under Device Options also allows you to register Host Routing Tables again (doesn't matter which line is selected, just register it).

The steps above have allowed my BB to boot from a cold start or QuickPull in under 3 minutes. I have ample space to install and test apps as I wish. My BIS service is fast and without problems.

To the naysayers and those that just accept to use that which they received, as they received it, you won't be happy with any other device, especially an Android or iOS device if you take that stance either.

How long have you been using BB for? I've been using the service for a decade or more now and I've noticed a steady deterioration over the past several years. Until recently I'd never even used wifi on mine but these days the Vodacom network is so poor that I'm forced to rely almost exclusively on it when I'm at home.

Hi bwana, as I said above, 2 weeks only. I can't comment on years of problems experienced, but I do know the steps I provided above has alleviated a lot of load from my device. I did the same on my Lady's 9300 and she is with CellC, no complaints from her as well.

I do understand that BIS had major blackouts and delays of service last year, I actively commented on it, but saying that every single user experiences these problems, aren't correct, since I don't.

I'm not sure what the conditions are like in your area but you might be lucky to be in a place where there is little congestion. TBH I'm not sure why any of the steps you outline would be making your connection any faster. :confused:
 
Why should you get a Blackberry?? <-- Easy answer is that you really should not waste money on such a cr@ppy brand phone.. They useless, slow, they break easy, they constantly freezes, pull battery slow reboot, can't get proper apps, not so many great features except for their bbm.. (And no BIS is not a great feature.. That free internet and email is the biggest lie being spread by dumb sales people at all the mobile operators.. R60 a month is a small price, but still not free)

Get a proper phone like Apple / Android / Even Nokia is better

"All the junk"? Does that include all the juvenile business apps as well?
 
I didn't say it was all junk - but Android does have a ton of usless apps that bloats the store to get the app numbers up. I'm often told how Android have 300,000 to BB Worlds 60,000 or so ... but who really cares with the quality of apps that are actually available :/

I type Facebook, Flicker and Twitter in BB World and download 3 apps, as that's what is available. You guys have 30 applications of each of those ... nearing 100 apps to do the same task.

In addition every person coming to brag about how special his Android is, shows me stupid gaming apps like viirtual beer, zombie booth or or talking tomcat.

Now because a BB doesn't do that - it's the worst phone in the history?
