Wifi problem on iphone

Hi guys. I'm new to the forum and to iphone. Please can someone help me. Battling for days now. My son brought back from the UK a (I pressume) 3g iphone and gave it to me as a gift. What i'v done so far is:- By using Blackra1n i managed to load Cydia on the phone, so I pressume it is jailbroken now. Had it on version 3.1.2 but downgraded back to 3.0 to jailbreak it. I want to use Cydia to unlock the phone, so I connect to wifi (good signal) , but when i click on Cydia i get the following error messages:- Network error and Unable to load. So without internet connection i'm stuck. I tried various other ways to unlock the phone without internet, but no success. Under "about" in General the following is displayed:-- Network not available, Capacity 7.1 GB, Available 6.8 GB, Version 3.0 (7A341), Carrier not available, Model MB489B, Modem Firmware 05.11.07. Will i be able to use the phone in S.A. Is it jailbroken or not. How can I unlock it without wifi. I have a contract with Vodacom. Been to a Vodashop. They cant help me. Please, I really like this phone. Currently I have a HTC touch Diamond. Thanks in advance

Firstly, I'd get the phone back to 3.1.2 - no reason not to, as you can unlock/jailbreak that. Could be some version of Cydia vs OS thing you have, just guessing.
I'd ensure that WiFi is 100% working before you do the Jailbreak. You say wifi was getting good signal and working, but then cydia doesn't work. That is not normal. Can you browse web sites with mobile safari? Do you not have any restrictions on your Wifi router like MAC address restrictions etc?
After that check out this tutorial http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=5886 - basically, get Blackra1n RC3 (is latest if I recall) and follow the steps, is pretty easy to get going.
There was a case where some people have had wifi issues after updating OS's - havent come across it myself but testing as I mentioned above would check those things.
Sure we can figure our how to get it sorted out.
