Will my car be written off?

Say what? My car's airbags do not depend on the headlights...

Not all cars do. Some have both some have only one.

Depends on the cars make and year model.

Edit: I think in later models it was moved to certain areas on the bumpers. not too sure.
I know some Jeeps still have it as part of the headlight. Sensor is mounted on the back of the headlight.

Update:

First assessment value received from the insurance assessor is R112k.

Next assessment will be from the appointed authorised repair workshop which will only happen after the claim is approved and they have stripped the car and assess any other potentially hidden repairs not on the first assessment. The repairs need to be at R145k for the insurer to consider a write off.

Next question is, how accurate are the initial insurance appointed assessments compared to actual quotes from the panel shops?

It's all a thumb suck really if you ask me. You can go to 3 different well known insurance approved places and their values are not even close.

The assessment is binding to the insurers approved list and that's what they will work on.
The assessor will have a gadget called Autodex with him and will assess the damage and insert it into the machine and the quantum will be revealed.
This is how most work these days.

Thanks

What happens if there are repairs needed that are not visible to the assessor?

The panel beater allocated the job will take up with the assessor/insurer.

Again check thoroughly before accepting and signing a AOL and even thereafter you will have recourse against any unforeseen damage within reason.
R112K isn't a lot of damage these days.

Assessors are normally people from that trade. So they are pretty close. And then once they have "assessed" the damage they make sure the rates charged by the repairer are within reason.

:erm:

@OP, wife OK? Friend of mine did the same.

Unfortunately common along that part of the N2 :(

Wife is doing fine for now. I am monitoring the situation in case there is any emotional fallout. Also have a psychologist on standby to offer assistance if needed.

With the figures above, I doubt they will find 30k more to repair. I don't think that they'll write it off

Panelbeaters are the rip off artists. They quoted me R18K to respray a fender, rear bumper, front bumper and bonnet, plus another R5k to "blend" it in. This on a MK6 Fiesta.

Just a quick update.

Car was collected by the appointed repair agents last Friday. They have done a more thorough inspection but still need to strip the car more to assess further damage, mainly to electrical and computer systems. They also have to still remove the windscreen to check for possible damage to the dash. Citroen will be sending a specialist to assist with the assessment of the damages and assist with the final repair quote. They have already indicated that they found substantial electrical damage that was not listed on the first assessment.

The car can be fixed as the damage is not structural but will depend on the final estimate. It does however look like the final repair cost will be in excess of R130k. I'm hoping for it to go as high as R145k in order to get the insurer to consider a write-off.

Update

Car is currently being repaired with most parts having arrived. 90% of the parts needed to be imported. The initial pricing from Citroen SA was based on a Euro/ZAR rate from May 2016 when it was trading at about R17.50 to the Euro. As parts were not locally available, pricing was recalculated on the rate at mid August of about R15.00 to the Euro. This resulted the repair costs being well under the write-off limit.

Last quote received below.

Would like advice on what to look out for in the quote and what to check when I collect the car probably middle of next month.
