Two points I'd like to make about this article:

1. We live in South Africa where corruption is RIFE!!! How long do you think those wads of cash are going to remain there for the companies use???

2. Telkom, like the guavament, is run by a bunch of delinquents who have no business savy...how's that going to change when they're actually forced to try and save the dying elephant.

Furthermore I think the educated consumer (being you and I and not impoverished communities) will make our financial decision when able to by shafting Telkom and moving to the competition. I know I will..

As competition enters the telecommunications market

If I had a rand for each time a journalist used that phrase I'd probably be able to afford some sort of global satellite service whereby the phrase might actually be true.

Right now I'm looking around and guess what - there is no competition!

So no - telkom will not suffer because their largest shareholder is the government. I would also speculate that the second largest group of shareholders are politicians.

In the real world telscum really does have a chance of turning around that company and becoming something truly amazing.

In SA telscum is run by a bunch of complete, money hungry, idiots. They care about NOW. Not next year, not next decade but NOW.

Really. Answer me this: If you were given the position of CEO of telscum for 2 years, what will you do? Me? I will screw as much money out of the public as I can and retire. Why? Because that is the telscum mentality and trying to do anything else at that company will only see you fired after 2 years anyway. Take the money and run.

I cannot wait for some real competition to have telscum go bankrupt. Most of their value is their 50% stake in vodacom anyway.

The big difference here is, that is pointed out be others already, is that EMC (as well as Microsoft, Google, Intel, Nvidia, etc, etc) has brilliant people with ambition (some even a tiny bit of compassion), vision and some conscience (some ). Telkom lacks all of it, but ambition to stuff their pockets full of paper buffalos.

Just look at our parastatals: with an unending cash pile funded by the taxpayer, organisations like SAA and Transnet are able to get away with corporate lunacy year in and year out.

Not parastatals, parasitals more likely.
