Will texting make you dumb?

Texting will not make you stupid

SMS language or ‘textspeak’ is taking a lot of flack for the general misuse of the English language today – both in spelling and grammar. But is it all negative?
sup so, ct b. wyd
Suppose so.
Could be
What you doing.

New language that is useful.
However I tried to debate using full words and sentences here in PD :)
It appears that we older folk have a communication gap as well as an generation gap now.

It is useful when both parties use the same conventions. However the rich canvas that some people can paint with elegances and a few well chosen words will IMHO make the readers the poorer if we all resorted to the shortest few msg txt tht w can g awy wth.

It will not make us dumber, just poorer.

B4n
By for now.
:)

Judging purely by the evidence of people around me, yes... yes it will.

They should do a study to find out if there is a correlation between knowledge/intelligence/academic achievement and the style of sms writing. Would Stephen Hawking write "hw u doing, wht u up2" ?

Thats a good thought. Does he use shorthand and have his assistants expand it?
I know that they do some of the maths for him.

I can just imagine his computer voice saying "How ya doin!" in Joe's voice from friends :P

Haha, that would sound better though? Why does it sound the way it is? It’s electronic so they could improve on it?

What a rubbish article the guys basically gone and said that

A) Texting is sub standard language
B) That it shouldnt be outside of the phone

I agree with both, that it sucks but has its place, the next thing is funny though.

C) Enforce not using it

So a persons just naturally going to separate themselves into two writing styles when they've grown up with it ? Let alone the part that 90% of teenagers will take the easier path and not care what their teachers/parents say.

Then again I've met people who say "LOL" and well, that's just a whole new level of bad.

I think the spill over is already happening.

Radio advertisements state that “T&C” apply.

If texting makes you stupid then the periodic table of elements should be abolished immediately!
Say no to H2O!
Say no to H2O!

Are you smart when you use valueable time for typing/writing longer words?

Whatever the answer, I suppose sms-language will always be connected with a dumb person. Internet trolls are a great example. ;)

Oh boy! Another hornets' nest. Problem is, neither correct spelling nor grammar are taught in schools these days. People think English is a "developing language" and therefore can misuse it at will. It will not only affect English but every language on the planet. Will texting make one dumber? Perhaps not, but one must assume the texting individual has been properly taught. PedanticMe out.

Oh hell... that's all we need, articles defending the use of text-speech!
If the need for using a dumbed down idiotic foundationless trogloditic and objectively retarded way of communication was born from the need to communicate faster and more efficiently on a mobile device, then I'd say improve the damn mobile devices.
Whenever I see the so-called text-speech crap pop up somewhere my brain automatically goes into some kind of momentary hibernation mode. I'd much rather share the world with a grammar Nazi around each corner than try to keep up and decipher ****-speak.
No thanks. Whether or not it's here to stay, and it obviously is, it still doesn't mean I have to accept it. Luckily a lot of forums I've been on seem to feel the same. I hope this one does too.

If this crap was kept only between friends like the article says, I'd have no problem with it. The thing is though, I see this tendency everywhere these days, and when someone starts to communicate with a complete stranger or an audience in this way I have no other words for it but pure and utter lazy disrespect. Luckily I don't have any worthwhile friends that use it and as far as I know they all feel the same. So let's keep text-speech where it belongs, let it be to written communication as mullets are to hairstyles.

I don't care if it makes people dumb or not, but it definitely makes them sound dumb.
