Was shocked to see when I requested an Uber X last week, the vehicle that rocked up was a Toyota Etios. Yoh.

My daughter ubers a lot in Pta. I do not foresee that we will stop using uber. Of course, she is aware that this is SA and one needs to stay alert.

We are caught between a rock and a hard place, you drive you get hijacked and you Uber you get robbed.

True, yeah but why would Uber do nothing to assist? They seem to vet the drivers better than Bolt. I've had guys come and fetch me in different cars than the ones advertised on Bolt but never had that happen on Uber.
Uber, Airbnb... they're faceless companies. Why should they assist? What's in it for the few people working there?

I have several complaints with Uber.
1. Damn near impossible to get an uber from any airport in SA without the whole "where are you going" crap.
2. Finally got an Uber black, got picked up with a VW Polo Sedan. R400 trip
3. Most othe Uber options are dangerous in the sense that the cars aren't roadworthy. Airbag lights on, seat belts don't work, and have had 2 incidents where the doors don't latch and 1 where the bootlid was tied closed with wire.

Uber has 0 interest in maintaining passenger safety

What exactly is this about? All my recent Uber and UberEats drivers have texted me beforehand asking where I'm going or where the delivery is. Are they trying to suss out the fee? I've just been answering honestly and it's worked so far.

Is this about the safety of uber or the state of their cars ? or maybe you are just trying to vent about being charged R400 for the trip? If you really feel that you are constantly experiencing poor service I think it will serve you better to ask friends/family to pick you up from airport drops etc. because otherwise why would you keep on repeating something that you can clearly see is not working?

They want to determine if they'll be taking you to a profitable area, an area with a high passenger rate.

Previously they would just cancel, now they ask and if your answer is not to a favourable area, they just idle until you cancel as they're now penalised for canceling rides.

Both actually. I'm miffed about being charged R400 for Uber Black and then being picked up in a VW Polo Sedan. That does not form part of the Uber Black list.

Yes, I now use alternative means, even when it costs more, however there are still occasions when an Uber is required. Yesterday for example, I needed an Uber to collect my fiance from the office. She was collected with a poorly repaired, likely Code 3, Toyota Etios with seatbelts that weren't functional.
This is a roadworthy requirement. She had to travel 20km in a car with no seatbelts.

When in Joburg on business a month back, I was picked up at the airport by a car who's bootlid was held closed with speaker wire.

The quality of service, at least in my opinion and experience, has deteriorated rapidly.

I now use family, friends and colleges as much as possible, rather giving them the money.

Nevertheless, these are my experiences, but I will not use an Uber for my family going forward

Do you report these experiences to Uber or do you just moan and think they must magically smell that there are issues?

Maybe the problem is South Africans not having any standards and not Uber.

Each incident has been reported.
My experiences of their decline has been on going since 2021, with an increase in incidents.

I felt it my duty to inform others of the experiences I've had, considering Uber provides the same old "We’re sorry to hear about the issue you’ve described. What you’ve shared is really concerning and we’re glad you’ve reported this to us." copy and pasted response on each and every case.

Now, lets think of this logically, considering I have had several safety related experiences with Uber, I think it would be fair to say that others have also had similar experiences. Assuming others also report these matters to Uber, you have to then ask, whats being done about it?

Is it AA / Dekra thats just taking the usual R200 bribe in the cubby to pass the car? Are Ubers processes of vetting and verification flawed? Or do people just not give a **** about their safety, and as you say, not have any standards.

Yes, the R400 Uber Black and getting a VW Polo Sedan is me being upset about what I got and has nothing to do with safety, thats just me being bitchy, but there are some real issues related to their road-worthiness of quite a few of these vehicles, these are MINIMUM standards after all, which most seem to see as a target to achieve, similar to the 30% pass mark.

If everyone reported it and makes noise on social media Uber won't have a choice but to step in. But most probably don't bother or just got so used to poor service and accepted it as the norm in Africa.

Yeah, great service, love it but I will say there definitely issues in Pretoria with it, particularly at the Hatfield Gautrain station. Lots of shenanigans going on there between Uber and metered taxi operators. Quite unpleasant.

Strong incentive to lie to them
