No, Whatsapp doesn’t. Telegram literally pops up with “elf_lord_ZC5 has joined Telegram”. You need to disable it in your settings but I don’t think most people know how.

I joined telegram to get into an MTI group and all it ended up doing was letting people find out that I wasn’t actually dead.

You disable it for yourself, but it is still broadcasted to everyone in your contacts (can't remember if you can choose not to include your contacts???) once you have joined.

Yes, I wasn’t clear. You can disable receiving notifications of other people joining but people will still receive notification of you joining if they haven’t disabled it.

As a notification or a chat? I’ve never seen that.

All I know is the “Hey there, I am using WhatsApp” which is the default status. But you’d need to go into someone’s profile to see that.

Basically a chat, now that I check, they now have spiel about the conversation being encrypted. Still a notification.

Perhaps it’s finally fixed now though.

I don't fault Telegram for it, and they're most likely promoting the regular use of their product in this manner. I just don't like it being broadcasted to my contact list. What is next? "Fulcrum messaged Abzo, do you want to enter a group conversation?".

I think you'd be surprised at the significant minority of non-tinfoil-hat folk, who are moving away from WhatsApp as a result of this latest change (though as @bwana said, I don't see anything new here, I think they are just making it explicit what they've been doing for a long time).

I've got some mildly influential businessmen as contacts through my parents, and quite a few of them are ditching WhatsApp now, turning to us Techies for advice.

WhatsApp was pretty good before it was bought out by FB. They had a pretty good model, appropriate for the smartphone era.

Technologically whatsapp is still pretty decent. The main objection at the moment is the FAcebook overlords.

Forced to use Facebook for work (ironically I do Facebook Ads) and have to deal with WhatsApp for work, because of some stubborn believe that new things are bad.

The original business model was that the download was free, and your first year was free, but after that it was like R10 per annum. I was paid up.

There were a number of workarounds for those cheapskates who didn't want to though, I seem to recall one being published right here on our very own MyBroadBand.

Was that not just on Android? As far as I remember, it’s always been free on iOS. At least I’ve never paid for it (since 2010) and without any workarounds.

Edit: apparently it was $1 on iOS too.
