What can I say? I'm an engineer...Technology gets me all hot and bothered...;)

I've been waiting for Telkom to give me ADSL for 5 years now, so this is the first 'ADSL-like' service I ever had...... ;)


BTW, I see you've got a ping reference in your sig. Although I don't believe there's ever been a proper acronym behind it, some people have decided it should be an acronym. Any idea what it it is?

Supposedly the real history ...

There are many who believe that PING stands for Packet InterNet Groper, and appealing as that idea is, the author of the program says he only wishes the inspiration were so glamorous. All he was really trying to do was to use the ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) to see if a particular IP address on a different network from his own was running. He likened this tool to a submarine's sonar and called it PING after the sound of the sonar hitting an object under water.

The stack bit refers to IP Stack.

You can of course interpret the definition any way you like :p

Oh ok than:p, so how is WiMAX? Is it anything like what they say it is on TV? max speed? u think it would have the same coverage as 3G... ?:confused:

I could do with 1024/512....
Whats the "cap" like on the service tho V3G?

Never believe anything you see on TV when it comes to technology ;)

I'm about 5Km from the tower and are getting the full speed the profile provides. Latency is also good.

I assume it's the distance thing.

Telkom varies between available and not available every other call. On a few occasions they said I can order and as soon as I do, they say it's not available....:rolleyes:

From what I understand this is an artificial limitation. Supposedly you can either have distance or speed and even at 20km the quoted figures are still in multiple megabits. So there should be no problem in providing that?

From my experience the technology (802.16e) is showing remarkable promise.

I'm 10.7Km from the BS with NLOS (zero, nada, nothing) and when participating in sector saturation testing I've gotten 7 Mbps down & 1.5 Mbps up (obviously on unlimited profile). Am cheating a bit, have 1m grid antenna attached to CPE.

Its amazing to watch S-OFDMA (that which set 802.16e apart from all other current radio technology) in action. As soon as the the CPE/BS arent able to maintain the highest modulation (QAM64 3/4), they start sub-channeling. I sometimes land up with 16 x QPSK/QAM16 communication channels running in parallel to maintain throughput. Its like wireless torrenting.
