Wimax with Mweb's Broadband ?

Hey,

I previously had an ADSL Line rental and the new Mweb Home Uncapped for R. 299 a month,

I have moved and now telkom have no infrastructure for ADSL in the area I live him, the lady from telkoms CEO office said I can use my wimax which will be set up next week with my service provider account, MWEB Uncapped.

I phoned MWEB, the consultant at MWEB says I have to convert my account and I simply cannot enter MWEB's details and access via the wimax connection.

Im not all technical, but is this true? Do I need another routers besides the billion? whats the most obvious scenario?

You can use a mweb uncapped adsl account on a telkom wimax line. We have a backup wimax line at the office and we use our mweb account on it whenever the adsl goes down. AFAIK the telkom wimax and adsl lines are both connected to the same telkom ipconnect network which the ISP's are connected to. Wimax is only 512k so don't pay for a 4meg mweb account.

If you want to connect 1 pc to wimax then you don't need a router but if you want to connect multiple devices (with wifi maybe) then you need a "broadband router" or setup the 1 pc connected to the wimax with internet sharing. You can't connect an adsl router as the wan port is replaced by the adsl modem rj11 port instead. You need a "broadband router" with a wan port.

WiMax isn't limited to just 512kbps, but it could be that Telkom places a limit on their WiMax clients' speed. eg. my office has a WiMax connection that peaks at like 7Mbps.

AFAIK the PPPoE connection that you make to Mweb would be exactly the same on WiMax, as it is on ADSL.
The only difference between the 2 that I can think of is that you don't have a land line number that would be connected to the WiMax connection, like you have with ADSL, and that is the only reason I can think of as to why you have to tell Mweb to "convert" your account for WiMax.

When Telkom provides you with the WiMax antenna, don't they also provide you with a broadband router too?

AFAIK Telkom only offer 512k Wimax. We only got a CPE unit with 1 x WAN ethernet port. Maybe they giving out broadband routers now but a year ago they didn't. I think Mweb also offer a wimax service so maybe the call centre person wants you to get their offering.

can you get a new wimax subs again? last i heard they just continue old ones, if your area doesn't have copper etc, they offer that 3g thing (not 8ta btw)

The WiFi CPE units that I've used all have routers with PPPoE clients.

I think the outdoor unit is a Alvarion BreezeMAX PRO and the indoor unit is a Alvarion ACPS-101g injector.

I have a normal mweb uncapped 1mbit account which I use over my telkom wimax connection. You just need a normal adsl account, nothing special. I have my voice line over the wimax as well.

Telkom put in a Alvarion outdoor unit and a poe inside by me. Then a locked Siemens Gigaset SX762. The telephones plug into the gigaset and there is 1 Ethernet port for pppoe. You cant log into the Gigaset at all.

So you need to get a broadband router that can dial the pppoe and provide you with some Ethernet ports and wifi. Or you can connect one pc to the gigaset and dial a pppoe from the pc.

I'm really surprised that Telkom would install such an expensive ADSL modem just to get VoIP via WiMax! That ADSL modem costs like R1400 if you buy it from Telkom, which is insanely expensive for what it offers, but then again I don't really know of any other VoIP routers either.

The Gigaset SX762 should be able to dial the PPPoE connection too, but since Telkom locked it there's probably not much that you can do about it.

I would love to see how Telkom integrates the VoIP, because it would be awesome to phone from your PC

Unfortunately the SX762 is locked down completely, no web interface, no IP address, nothing.

All you can do is connect your telkom phone to the RJ11 and do a pppoe dialup on the RJ45.

Seems like the hardware has plenty of potential if we could only get in.
