Did the creator update earlier today, got back to pc this evening only to catch the tail end of an auto update and restart, I had work open and was halfway through some stuff, now all lost.

I did some policy fiddling before and stopped all auto updates or restarts, I'd get notification of an update but I could choose when to download it and install/restart.

I don't want any auto anything, I work all times of the day, I don't want any rubbish restart at 3am or whatever the case may be. These things must faq off till I'm ready to let them do their thing.

Has anyone discovered a hack yet to disable this, those fskers at MS deserve to be drawn and quartered, seriously. I'm totally against violence but these dumb konts must pay, I'm tired of this retarded bs!

How do people with mission critical systems manage with this?

I've heard of some pretty serious situations where a pc will suddenly be stuck updating/restarting for half hour at the most inopportune time possible and there ain't schit you can do but watch in abject terror/dismay.

While I'm not having issues with Windows 10 following the creators update, I definitely wouldn't have upgraded a mission critical machine. Roll back perhaps if you haven't deleted the installation files.

I'm obviously doing it wrong. Twenty-five years of Windows installs and updates and haven't lost so much as a byte of work. Creators Update on my machines doing fine. Actually used 3D Paint to edit a pic the other day.

So you have successfully turned off the restart window on Win 10 Creators editions, please just tell the gentleman how...

Here are some handy links on how to disable Windows 10's Automatic Updates:

After using the Group Policy Editor on my installation of the Windows 10 Pro Creator's Update - as it arbitrarily RESET all of the settings back to the default AFTER the update had completed, this is how the Update Settings screen now looks - see highlighted areas:

Turned nothing off.

Updates happen under my control. Though most of my systems are on 24/7, I don't leave them overnight with unsaved work.

There are ways to get out of auto restart. I have mastered them for my windows 10 machine. Didn't even have to use other software.

Well, then you did some back end stuff to your Windows 10, and definitely don't use Home edition.

I use this http://www.windowscentral.com/how-stop-updates-installing-automatically-windows-10 "How to prevent automatic updates using the Local Group Policy Editor"

It does not download/install anything without me clicking on the Download button, it only notifies me of available updates.

That used to be the case but not after the creators update or do I need to go set everything up again?

From what I have found even the group policy settings regarding updates/restarts have been nullified or removed now with the creators update.

Group policy doesn't work on Home edition. Besides, read post from Ivan Leon, he is using group policy as you see on attachments. Creative update seems to invalidate some group policy settings, now you get this message:

"We'll ask you to download updates, except when updates are required to keep Windows running smoothly. In that case, we we'll automatically download those updates".

It is a new challenge for those who still want to fight Microsoft against updating their systems automatically.

EDIT: I see in later post airborne confirms the above.

The bolded part I'm aware of. If the rest is true as you say (have not checked) then that is a fsckup of note as I would be pissed if it did it's own thing. Hopefully someone finds a fix for this.

Edit: Just checked and I now see this,

This is a load of bollocks!

Yip, it's faqing ridiculous.
Why do they need to be so draconian?

They allow you to switch off updates totally for 35 days so why not also allow manual updating and restarting within that time frame of 35 days.

I seriously don't know how Ms consistently messes this one up, it's illogical, must be some systematic thing within the MS organization, the reasonable guys have to paste on half workable solutions after the dictators have made they ruling.

No hack required.

Just set your active hours...and learn to save.

No hack required.

Just set your active hours...and learn to save.

Some people can be active anywhere in 24 hours, and they only allow a 12 hour active window to be set...

And one can't for example easily save a render or encoding while it's in progress...

I personally would find a max 20 hour active window acceptable.
