According to Neowin, the reliable Windows rumor source, WPdownunder, reports that Australia is in line to be part of the Microsoft Surface tablet launch on the 26th of next month.

Neowin goes further to speculate that:

"If the rumor is accurate, then it would look like Microsoft is preparing for a global launch of the Surface".

iPad3 vs Win8 Samsung Tab

This is one of the best demonstrations that I have seen of the reasons why Win8 should be my next move.

We have already seen how awesome the Lumia 920 is.

Now this video demonstrates how much more awesome a Win8 tablet is over the iPad 3.

The video is 12'+ but it is worth every second.

Shame. Apple device owners.

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.

While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

HP Shows its Win8 Mantle

Although HP is not seriously committed to Win8 RT yet, it has spoken out openly about how serious it is about Win8 x86. It is gunning for enterprise.

014ElitePad_900_gallery_post.jpg

Now it seems HP has stopped all the talking and is now doing the producing.

TheVerge details HP's Elite Pad 900 here.

Although I am already a fan of a Win8 tablet with a docking station, this one doesn't quite hit the spot for me. The docking station is too much of an addition with little use than just that (a docking station) for my liking. Further, the 'smart jacket' looks too clunky for it to be fashionable.

009SmartJackets-10_gallery_post.jpg

I hope they are targeting the construction (or similar) industry with that design because that jacket and the general clunkiness of the whole ElitePad 900 set up does appeal to me at all. It is not a fashionable device. It is way too much functionality over style than the other way round.

Lumia 510 ('Glory') WP7.5/7.8 Spotted in the Wild

There is hope yet for those of you looking to buy or have recently bought a WP7.x phone.

It is clear that Nokia will be supporting WP7.x phones for a while longer since they will be releasing new ones still as evidenced by this article.

Nokia Using Its RT Tab to Test Apps. Q: When is it on the market?

Finally some good news for Nokia fans on the tablet front.

Nokia-Windows-8-tablet.jpg

Apparently Nokia does have a tablet already and they are using it to test apps and they have even given it to MS partners to test apps too.

Story here from WMPowerUser.

Panasonic 11.6" Win8 Hybrid Tablet/Laptop @ CEATEC Japan 2012

ax-series.jpg

I need a new PC for my home.

My Fujitsu Siemens work laptop is fine but I still have a 2006 Pentium IV at home running Win XP.

My Pentium IV is decent and it still works fine but I've had to replace a few things (don't ask me what they are) after it just died on me three or four times already. So, I figure now is the time for an up grade.

What better than upgrading straight to Win8.

IMO there is no better time. I waited since May this year when I almost bought a Win7 laptop. I am glad I have waited till now because it surely looks like I will be spoilt for choice with some great devices. I will also have a tablet in that same replacement.

Anyways, I have been looking at a lot of devices (concepts and prototypes ready for the market 'hardwarewise') and the plethora alone amazes me. And I'm not even thinking about the actual win8.

Panasonic is in the mix too now with a Taichi like device which spots a 11.6" screen. Engadget gives us some detail here from their encounter with it at CEATEC Japan 2012. It is a hybrid and it launches on the 26th of this month. Unfortunately it will only be available in Japan initially.

I am not sure how big the Taichi is but for me the bigger the better since it will be a PC replacement.

What kind of Win8 device are you going for?

Acer Iconia W700 W8 tab for US$799 with everything (dock & keyboard)

DSC_4374-2_gallery_post.jpg

Story here:

Acer has announced that their 11.6 inch Windows 8 will be hitting the market on the 26th of October with a pretty reasonable price.

The device, with a full HD 1080p screen and 1.8 ghz Core i3 Ivybridge processor will cost $799, and will come bundled with a desktop dock and Bluetooth wireless keyboard.

Acer will also be offering the device with a Core i5 processor and 8 GB of RAM for $999.

The 64 GB device also has 4 GB RAM, a one megapixel front and 5 megapixel rear camera, a USB 3.0 port which is tripled when docked and a microHDMI port, and only weights 2.3 pounds.

The dock and keyboard is designed to remain at your home base for serious desktop use, allowing the unencumbered tablet to be taken away easily for on the road use.

The price for the bundle is very competitive with the iPad, which costs $699 for the 64 GB WIFI version, with the official dock costing $29 and the keyboard $69.

Will any of our readers be picking this up? Let us know below.

An Interesting Take on the Rationale Behind the Hybrid PC

Here is a view on the rationale behind the slew of the types of Win8 devices that are coming out.

Why Hybrid Win8 Devices.jpg

I agree. We do not need only one type of device for computing in as much as there are different types of passenger cars. The sedan is not the only vehicle (equate that to current tablets - iPad and Galaxy Tabs; in fact all Android tablets).

I couldn't have said it better.

Nevertheless, I would substitute the 5 door Fiesta for a 3 door one. Although I think the point is well made.

LG's fore into the Win8 tablet & PC space...

lg_windows_8_pcs_0-580x384.jpeg

Accroding to TheVerge, LG will be releasing two types of Win8 devices;
i. A sliding tablet with keyboard, which looks very much like the Sony Vaio Duo 11 and
ii. An All-In-One PC.

What is interesting to me is the tablet which also apparently acts as a TV when the PC mode is switched off.

Full story here.

That there (the image) is the best combination of form factor, price and size for my needs. The only thing missing is an ethernet port. Also need the version with 3G (and LTE if possible) so the Samsung (Ativ) Smart PC may actually be the best option for me.
