Winamp 5.3 and BSOD's

Eish, where to start...

So, here's the shorter version of what happened. I installed winamp 5.3 off an old cd I had lying around, since winamp 5.08 that I was using had a crash and it would just stop responding every time I play a file. After I installed 5.3, it worked okay until I shut down the PC. Just after WinXP says 'shutting down computer', I get a BSOD for a few milliseconds and then the PC reboots and it won't load windows again. At startup I get the same problem: BSOD, then a hard reboot. Now, I'm using a Gigabyte mobo (oldish one) with a VIA ac97 sound card that has forever been giving problems with my games. Last year I bought a cheapo sound card, and that solved the problem. Seems to me the VIA drivers are problematic. I have to repair my Windows installation every single time I switch the PC on. Quite annoying. Switching sound cards and removing drivers didn't help, and removing winamp neither. Methinks winamp damaged some system files, but I'm not too sure. Anyone that might know of a solution to my problem?
 
Is the pc in question the one in your signature? I would definitely buy a new PSU for that thing. If it has a 200Watt PSU that thing is quite a few years old and could be the cause to your system problems.

I would also suggest learning about Windows System Startup and which processes are required and necessary.

Use Sysinternals Autoruns to delete erroneous entries on startup and driver references that were not removed(marked by: file not found (safe to delete this):

Also. Do a normal Checkdisk on your harddrive, this is bound to solve many problems you may have. Never underestimate the power of Windows Checkdisk. It has even fixed my corrupt Nokia 5800 memory card, the thing works wonders.

Tx teraside. I have a 350w psu in at the moment, haven't updated my sig in a while though (oops). I don't have access to the net, working from a cell with Opera Mini on for the time being. Everytime I get the pc going, I get an error report. I saved the error signature, would it help if I typed it here so you guys can see or is it not really necessary?

The error report will only say that a critical error occurred with a reference number, it's not much help actually.

I would still suggest downloading the program I suggested. Maybe hook your phone to your pc briefly and get it. Also the site I mentioned is just for reference purposes, but for this exercise, just leave all Microsoft processes/services to run and disable/delete all others that aren't required. (just in startup, not drivers and everything else).

Autoruns is less than 500kb big, so hardly a long download.

Open up your pc, remove your PCI cards and any extras, dust them off, or blow off with cold air (like a hair dryer on cold).

Check that your case is fairly clean. Reconnect your drives inside (hdd, cd-rom etc.) and take things from there.

A stuffy pc can also cause issues. Also, if you've used any cracks/keygens recently you might as well backup everything, format and reload your computer. It's a given that you will have a virus/malware causing the errors then. It doesn't help that you don't have internet, otherwise you could use malware removal tools.

That's about it for now.

Remember to run the checkdisk as well.

Open My Computer> Right click your hardrive> Choose properties> click tools and check now> choose both options, apply and if it asks to check at restart, say yes and restart your pc.

I'll see what goes for what, but it's a given that the pc won't start up after the reboot. I even doubt it'll restart correctly...but I'll try what I can. Thnx very much for the help + advice, much appreciated! :)

EDIT: I tried Last Known Good Configuration, and whaddiya know - it works...

i just installed v5.572 but the ipod does not show up in it, what have i done wrong?
