Just reinstalled Windows 10 Pro on a PC that has been happily running Windows 10 for quite a while.

It was always activated with the same Windows 10 digital licence and no hardware change was made whatsoever.

It refuses to activate giving me the following nonsensical error:

Windows 10 Error WTF.jpg

Any suggestions?

OEM or retail license? Try calling Microsoft if it's retail. If you don't know, call them anyways, they'll tell you if it's OEM after they try activating.

Will call Microsoft.

This PC was upgraded to Windows 10 Pro with the free upgrade offer when it was available, and never had this issue before, even though the OS was reinstalled several times.

Then the deeper question is why do you keep reinstalling?

Should only ever need to do that once.

Had that once. Seems M$ had issues their side. After a while it changed ...

As a thought - you can connect to the net? ;)

Just needs to either be activated later or you can contact microsoft and they will fix it in 5 minutes for you

If you replace system drive with SSD it asks to activate again. Annoying. I just kmspico'd mine last time - too much hassle to call lol.

Interesting. Had to reinstall multiple times and still happy? ;)

On the serious note, I think error message is very informative and truthful. Your copy of Windows is not the same as previously. Use the same copy as previously when it was working or download proper copy from Microsoft. There are different version of Win10 Pro: Retail (the one you download from Microsoft), MSN, Educational or MLP. This has been changed with 1709, now there are only two ISO images Standard and VL:
With Windows 10 Fall Creators Update v.1709 RTM ISO disc images, Microsoft has essentially combined all editions of Windows 10 into a single ISO. Hence only two main Windows 10 Build 16299.15 ISO images are available for each 32-bit and 64-bit system architecture, excluding the Home edition for China, and the user use a product key specific to the edition that he or she wants to activate. The editions that contained inside a single disc image are:

Windows 10 (multi-edition), Version 1709 (Updated Sept 2017)
Windows 10 S
Windows 10 S N
Windows 10 Home
Windows 10 Home N
Windows 10 Pro
Windows 10 Pro N
Windows 10 Pro for Workstations
Windows 10 Pro for Workstations N
Windows 10 Core Single Language
Windows 10 Education
Windows 10 Education N

Windows 10 (multi-edition) VL, Version 1709 (Updated Sept 2017)
Windows 10 Pro
Windows 10 Pro N
Windows 10 Education
Windows 10 Education N
Windows 10 Enterprise
Windows 10 Enterprise N

Exactly what I did in the end.

Spent enough time chasing Microsoft bugs to last a lifetime.

Still exactly the same hardware though, and exactly the same version of Windows that it always had.

Noticed that quite a few bugs were introduced in the 'Fall Creators Update', so it might have something to do with that.
