Hi All

Ever since August, I upgraded to Windows 10 and slow boot times, when downloading large files or torrenting, it drops the wifi connection and says limited. Laptop runs really slow and I'm not at all happy. With windows 8.1 Pro, it used to be a beast. Any ideas of what I can do? I did contact Microsoft and they were very unhelpful. Installed windows 10 drivers from HP website and still slow. Now its become unbelievably slow. Windows update never ever works. At least in Win 8.1, I could do it Manually from Contol Panel.
Laptop is a Hp Envy i7 4700Mq
8Gb Ram
2Gb Nvidia GT740M
Should I revert back to windows 8.1?

Thanks in advance.

Any ways of backing up all my files to the same disk drive? I ask as I don't have an external HDD

fresh install will do the trick

Windows 10 will usually place the old files in the Windows.old folder in C drive after a fresh install.

Even so, you'd be mad not to have an external or online backup. How do you currently back up your stuff?

You really should get a external drive for backups.

What you could do is check how much data you have, resize your existing windows partition and create a new partition in the now free space and copy your data there. You'll have to be careful when doing a fresh install not to overwrite that 'backup' partition.

Not a great backup though if it's on the same drive.

Either an external drive, or if you are talking about small things like documents and photos then Google Drive will do the job.

Once stored, you can do a fresh install of Windows 10.

This is very know fact. It probably cost you many gigabytes of data as well, as when it fails, it keeps downloading fresh copies again. Don't do Windows update, disable automatic updates if you have Windows 10 Pro.
Any idea on how to to the fresh install after the free upgrade has been done?
You can do fresh install, but I don't think you need it. The first step is to disable fast startup in power options and reboot. You shoud notice system running more smooth.

The second step is to download a Media Installation Tool. Run it and select options to download ISO file and save it on the hard drive. Once downloaded, back it up on external drive for future use.

Now open ISO file, run setup and you can do either a fresh installation or couple other options. I suggest the first time use option to upgrade and keep your programs and files, as your problem is a botched update.

No one suggested a virus scan?

Install crystaldiskinfo to see if your HDD is damaged.

If you've activated W10 on that machine you can do any number of fresh installs.

I doubt your problem in W10, though. Check for malware, then drivers, then RAM and HDD.

Thanks a million. I will try doing that.

Well he has nothing else and I did start off by saying he should get an external drive. I provided him with a possible option.
