It has been a staple of Microsoft operating systems for years, a simple relaxing way to pass the time and relieve boredom.

But anyone trying to play solitaire on Windows 10 is now hit with a pop-up banner asking to pay to play the game without adverts.

The US version says a one-month, ad-free, upgrade costs $1.49, while a yearly subscription costs $9.99 (ÂŁ6.40).

Users who do not pay will see 30-second video adverts between matches.

Eish, the start of things to come?

Yep, the same strategy as Google, advertising is the game. Turn your services into a billboard.

They've been including solitaire since 1990 - how much development does it need?

Exactly.

Since Windows 8 it has been redeveloped and re-branded into the Microsoft Solitaire Collection and available in the Store, but with Windows 10 it is installed by default.

I don't see Solitaire in my version of W10, there are other card games but not Solitaire.
