So when Th2 drops in Q4 is that also RTM?
This I don't know. I do now that manufacturers can not afford halting entire production line due to some obscure bug coming with minor update, they need stable release and it is called RTM (release to manufacture). I don't say for sure it is 10240, but very likely, due to the timing (if they want to release product on the same time as MS retail release) and the fact of removing prelease thingy. It is also possible that we won't see RTM after all, as it is not our (end user) business.

I receive Microsoft's statement that Windows 10 is a service very straightforward:
- expected lifespan of mainstream devices is 4 years (revenue comes from OEM licencing)
- Windows is not a product itself - is just a platform for generating revenue. Microsoft learned it from Apple and is constantly changing business model to follow them. So they offer Store, cloud service, OneDrive and cloud based user account with backup. They tried it already by force in Windows 8 (by tying mail client to the MS account by example), it generated negative perception, now the decided for more flexible approach. Some apps can carry optional price tag, other will be subscription based products like Office 365. Revenue comes from many sources, it will be more significant than from Windows itself.

I believe that the words coming out of Satya's mouth about Windows as a Service aren't representative of what they're really trying to do here. They're paying lip service to the idea, and they've certainly changed Windows around some to support parts of the theory, but the status quo really remains unchanged, even if the new hotness looks incredibly new and shiny and interesting. There are several reasons why I believe this:

1) Windows will still be a fully paid and fully packaged product from launch, and for every other consumer who didn't take up the upgrade offer in the first year. OS X is actually a service, when you think about it. Its just treated as another update.

2) Windows is still a platform. It serves as the base for applications to launch into a huge existing market of potential users (especially if apps are backported to support Windows 8.1), and Windows 10 offers some radically different things to developers making apps for Web 2.0, or whatever the hell they want to call the kind of internet that will surround IoT devices. Windows as a platform is still an immense driver of new technology.

3) Microsoft doesn't generate nearly as much money from OEM licensing as they do from the server world and selling Office to corporates. Look at this:

Now look at this:

They could give away Windows for free for the next decade if they wanted to. But they won't, because their investors like money.

4) The coming change of being able to tie a Windows license key to your Outlook/Hotmail account is already there, but it will take another three years for consumers to be used to the idea. Windows, even when handing over licensing to per-user accounts, is still not a service, and I doubt that the majority of customers will buy a Windows license through their Outlook/Hotmail accounts either.

Why can't I get to my HTPC via explorer, but I can ping it. I can do it from another windows 8.1 based pc. What am I missing?

I decided to upgrade my new laptop to Windows 10 this morning and everything went smoothly. I was a bit hesitant at first because of the issues I had when upgrading from Windows 7 to 8 at release date. (finding compatible drivers and such) This time around it couldn't have been more of a joy, no problems or issues at all.

I haven't checked out all the new features, but so far it seems promising.

Make sure both systems are on the same network type ie. Private and Private or Home and Home etc.

Double check sharing permissions.

Remote to the box if the above didn't solve the issue. Had the same issue.

Used the Xbox Streaming system. Pretty furking cool, especially since you no longer need a dedicated capture card.

Slight lag in first person games but racing games are fine.

Not entirely sure if I'll use this, maybe become a YouTube letsPlayers but cool non the less.

Is anyone struggling to get the latest Windows Updates on the 10240? I was able to download the KB3074665 security update which was installed successfully, however, now the windows update just sticks on "checking for updates..." ever since.

I activated it with the elevated command prompt method faniedry mentioned in a previous post (probably the reason for this problem).

I'm still not sure if pirate copies will be "updated" to licensed copies... anyone have an article confirming whether this is true or not? So many articles with different opinions out there.

Windows 10 upgrades will remain ungenuine for pirates.
