Windows 10 warns users not to install Chrome and Firefox

The newest Windows 10 Insider preview build includes a pop-up warning when users attempt to install Google Chrome or Firefox.

Upon opening the installation program for either of these browsers, Windows 10 opens a window which warns against installing the browser – stating that users “already have Microsoft Edge – the safer, faster browser for Windows 10”.

I booted up a new PC with a new installation of Windows 10 about a month ago. I got the same message when trying to get a new browser.

What is windows 10? Didn't get that warning in ubuntu, centos, fedora or freebsd...

My checklist for converting our business PC's to Linux only has 3 items left on it. started with 9 items at the beginning of this year.

Microsoft is not helping their cause by adding stuff to my Windows 10 naughty list

Meh. Just done my PC updates today and have had no such popup screens to contend with. Have Chrome running in addition to MS Edge.

Yes, it isn't new. 1803 pops it, don't know about the other versions. Maybe it is a new 'massive' warning?

Yep, 'new' warning,

IMHO, I don't see anything to cry about, they don't prevent a third-party browser to be installed. They only highlight that Windows 10 already has a browser. I mean, click the 'install anyway' button. More a reminder than anything else. Like any other business, that is called customer retention by marketing.

I'd rather use IE11 than Edge. Edge is just clunky and crap...

Out of interest, I just updated my Chrome browser on Windows 10.

I actually like the new Chrome with rounded tabs, and more...

Actually I've seen similar messages before when using Edge to download Firefox and Chrome. So not really new per se, but perhaps a little more invasive than before?

The old popups happened in Edge when downloading third-party browsers (or when changing the default app within the browser as a guide) I don’t know whether this one is in addition to the old warning, it’s not made out very clearly, but yes, it looks to be more invasive.

As always, I support choice, but I will give MS leeway here since it is in their own ecosystem, and they don’t prevent a third-party browser to be installed.

Same. It's not exactly something that'll make a big difference in my life, or anyone else's for that matter. You still have the freedom of choice to make your own informed decisions.

I actually think the Edge browser is pretty good. The Android one is good too and even has built-in ad blocking.

However:
- sync is broken most of the time
- can't rearrange extension icons
- poor extension availability
- zoom increments are too large and aren't specific to domains

So for me it isn't a possibility over Chrome. And I really love the Feeder.co RSS Chrome extension as well as the beautiful Google Earth new tab page. Which reminds me that Google Earth's web app only works in Chrome.
