Windows 11 Support Thread

Intel Core Ultra 9 185H
Looks like that is not a problem with the hardware, although not all the drivers may be fully matured yet. As a random thing to try, maybe switch the graphics to NVIDIA only. This will bypass the Intel graphics drivers and avoid switching. May need a reboot and will consume the battery quicker however.

Use Rufus on a USB flash drive, using a downloaded ISO copy of the newest version of Windows 11 25H2...

Thank you sir.

So I have updated now. It is a Z170A GAMING PRO CARBON motherboard and a Core i7 6700K CPU. latest BIOS was in 2018, Secure Boot is on in BIOS and Motherbaord TPM 2.0 is on (Obviously the 6700k doesnt have TPM support). But now they won't bring an update for the BIOS to the latest certificates.

I windows security I get the certificate expiry issue:

You will probably get the Secure Boot Signature Database update pushed through via Windows Update soon - I recently got it for one of my laptops...

I read last night when I couldn't sleep, you need to have diagnostic data sent to Microsoft in order to receive it.

So the memory dumps first showed the issue is the Nvidia driver, then DirectX , then the Intel Graphics Driver. But it is always graphics related.

Happened on the previous BIOS update and the latest April update.

Maybe you can try and install the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant and let that decide what's the best drivers for your system to install.

I did a forced update and security says all is good.

Windows installation failing with Rufus. See there is a Redit thread with options to look at. I did select some of the additional options in Rufus to see what they do, such as not to require a windows account to login and removing bloatware.

Rufus explains why the new way to install Windows 11 is currently broken - Neowin

Rufus is having trouble completing the installations of Windows 11 when using its new silent install method. The app's dev has explained why.

Earlier this week, Rufus received a major update with the final version of 4.14. It's a major update for sure as the new release brings a new way to install Windows 11 with a new silent option, allows you to disable several pre-installed apps and more. Check out the full details in its dedicated piece here.

However, a recently reported bug has been affecting the silent Windows installation feature and Peter Batard, the developer of the tool, confirmed it as he was able to replicate it too.

Affected users report that Windows installations created with Rufus seem to be failing consistently at around 75% completion, thus stopping the setup process before the installation is finished. The issue appears across multiple hardware specifications, indicating it is not limited to certain configurations only.

One of the users, pineapple63, was able to determine that the Autounattend XML file could explain what's going as without the XML file, the installation ran fine with no errors. This gave a clue as to what could be going on as a modified XML was able to get work around the issue.

Batard explained: "... now I am able to replicate the issue if I completely clear the target disk first. My current guess is that if Windows sees a partition it can access there, it might try to map it as D-drive (since it would of course reserve C-drive for the system drive), and because it is already mapped, our own mapping of the USB drive is pushed further down to something Windows is happy with. But Setup sees no partition it can map, our D-drive mapping succeeds, and it seems to throw Setup off for some reason."

This is not the first time that Windows or Microsoft has been blamed for issues on Rufus as something similar had happened back in February too.

He further added: "Interestingly, on a system with a blank disk, and even when not mapping anything to D-drive, you will find that there is a D-drive during the file copy stage, labelled EFI but with no data on it .... So it does indeed look like D-drive is a reserved letter by Setup, and trying to map something to it is asking for trouble... unless it was already automatically mapped by Setup during disk/volume discovery (which will be the case if you happen to reinstall Windows over a previous install... instead of starting with a blank system)."

For now, the Rufus author has devised a test version to see if it's working. If you wish to try it out yourself you can get it from here on GitHub thread discussing the issue. You can also avoid using the silent installation feature as a temporary workaround.

New Rufus update bugs out the Windows 11 system requirements bypass option - Neowin

The new Rufus update is having an issue related to the Windows User Experience that allows several custom Windows 11 install options.

Rufus is a widely used utility for creating bootable USB drives, includes features that allow customization of Windows installation parameters, including bypassing certain system checks that were introduced with Windows 11. This past week, the tool received a major update with the final version of 4.14.

The new release brings a new way to install Windows 11 with a new silent option, allows you to disable several pre-installed apps and more. Check out the full details in its dedicated piece here.

However as we reported earlier, the silent installation option is currently broken since it seems to get stuck at around 75%. The app author Pete Batard explained why that's happening.

That's not the only issue though as a newly reported bug suggests that recent changes may have introduced a problem in how user preferences are handled when creating Windows installation media. It seems that the latest Rufus update no longer remembers certain “Windows User Experience” (WUE) settings between sessions.

The issue appears to be related to bypassing hardware requirements, such as TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and RAM limits, as that option resets itself even after being manually cleared by the user.

The user, pineapple63, who helped confirm the issue, notes that earlier versions like 4.13 retained these preferences as expected. He wrote:

"There does seem to be some sort of issue with the WUE option to bypass system requirements not persisting, although it seems to only happen when no WUE options are selected ... If i deselect all WUE options, click OK, and then click cancel on the warning that the drive will be erased, then click start again, it does not remember that i deselected it, and this also happens if i click OK on the warning and let it create the USB".

With the help of that, Pete Batard was able to figure out that the problem was a result of recent modifications to the utility's internal dialog handling that were made with the commit "92a8926". On the positive side, Rufus should still allow users to bypass Windows 11 requirements since the "remove requirement for 4GB+ RAM, Secure Boot and TPM 2.0" option always comes back checked.

Batard assured of this as he wrote: "... leaving the bypass options enabled has absolutely NO negative incidence or alteration with regards to the final Windows installation on systems that have a TPM. Exactly as you should expect for the RAM bypass (which of course isn't going to restrict Windows to using only 4 GB of RAM if it has more than that), the TPM bypass also in no way prevents Windows from using it (even if it somehow was disabled during installed and then turned back on)."

At the time of writing, the issue remains open but Batard suggests that it "should be an easy fix" as he already figured out the root cause fairly quickly.

Yes. I switched off all the options except for that one. Then it worked.

Wow. What an experience with Dell. They stopped replying to my emails as I switched over to Basic Support extended warranty from Pro Support. And the ongoing ticket got closed.

So I managed to get hold of a phone number that works and that does not cut off (no, it is not South Africa. Dublin and then India).

1. Pro Support says they can see the email but they closed it and I need to be transferred to Basic Support.
2. Basic Support says they can't help as the issues tarted during Pro Support so they need to transfer me to Pro Support.
3. Pro Support says as I am now on Basic Support so they are transferring me back to Basic Support Hardware division.
4. Hardware division says as the BIOS diagnostic scan is not returning and error, this is a software support issue and as software is not covered under basic support (their warranty support division took 3 months of communication and gave me the wrong info) they are transferring me to the software devision and I need to pay extra.
5. Software division says they going to check and it will cost me a R1000 or whatever. I told them to read the original email which concluded it is not a software issue. They read through the email. They asked all the questions and checked all the usual troubleshooting. They wanted proof that windows was reinstalled (CMD > Systeminfo). They said they can confirm it is not a software issue as all trouble shooting has been done, everything is up to date and they have no further solutions. They transfer me back to hardware division although at this stage I am probably speaking to an Angel in the New Jerusalem Division. She is an Indian lady, super cool, lovely voice. I digress....
5. Jerusalem Division asked to take screen control and collect some system logs (which I could have done myself), they check the Systeminfo again. She contacted the upper most department who is busy going through the logs. They come back and say it is hardware issue and the GPU needs to be replaced.
6. I am now getting a new ticket for replacement parts in a couple of days and if parts are available.

So that is 3 hours and 30 minutes . The difference between Basic Support and Pro Support warranty is 3 hours and 30 minutes and R20 000.

WoW, well lets hope a replacement GPU fixes your issues once and for all

Is the R20k for a new GPU ? o_O
No the 20K is if I wanted ProSupport. So you just send an email they email back and forth and then replace parts. The Basic Supports was 20K less. But it took almost 4 hours and have to pay extra to look at the sofrware. So basic support only work if the Diagnostic test returns a hardware error, when from my experience has never happened.

Win 11 Pro with local account. Every once in a while, Windows decides to replace my static picture wallpaper with Windows Spotlight. I then have to change it back to picture and select my background again. WHY?
