Windows 11 Support Thread

Win 11 Pro with local account. Every once in a while, Windows decides to replace my static picture wallpaper with Windows Spotlight. I then have to change it back to picture and select my background again. WHY?
It's like Edge that keeps reverting back to Bing. Very annoying.

Because they started to add crap to the OS back in W10 days already that they actually have NO idea about .... even if that Spotlight feature stops working, not a single Microslop employee would be able to tell you how to fix it ... been there, done that, but didn't want the t-shirt 🤪

So, yesterday morning my landlord asks me to sort out one of his work PC's - a HP ProDesk 600 G1 desktop tower with an Intel Core i3-4570 (4th Gen) CPU, 4GB of RAM & a 500GB SATA HDD & Windows 11 Home 24H2 (Not Activated) - his comment: Eishhh, there's a problem - the user says "It's VERY SLOW!"...

After a few minutes of diagnosis, I find the 'problem' in the Power Settings options - 'someone' had changed the default power scheme from 'Balanced' to 'Power Saver' - remember, this is a DESKTOP PC plugged into 220V AC Mains power...

After changing it back to 'Balanced', I scrounged around & managed to locate a valid Win 11 Home licence key that was originally activated on one of my laptops, before I had upgraded it to Win 11 Pro - so I used that to successfully activate Win 11 Home.

When doing Windows Updates in the afternoon, it failed to install the '2026-04 Preview for 24H2', so I decided to try & see if I could sort that out this morning - when the rain woke me up at around 03h00, I fed the cats & at 03h15 tried Windows Update again.

This time around it popped up with 'Windows 11 24H2 repair version' - so I clicked on 'Download & Install' - left it to continue & went back to bed again.

At 06h15, I checked up to see how far it had got with the 'repair' and it was still busy 'downloading'... so I again left it to complete...

Well - FINALLY - at 12h15 (that's NINE HOURS LATER) - it finished 'downloading' & began 'installing' - at 13h15 - I checked up again to see how the 'install' was progressing... it did 2 reboots & then got the dreaded "Undoing changes made to your computer' error message... - FFS!

Time to try an 'in place' upgrade to 25H2 using Rufus to see if that installs successfully - hopefully before the heat death of the universe arrives...

Just ran sfc /scannow on the problematic HP ProDesk 600 G1 desktop tower & this is the result:

Hopefully this will solve the Windows Update issue - otherwise it's Rufus time...

Wow. What an experience with Dell. They stopped replying to my emails as I switched over to Basic Support extended warranty from Pro Support. And the ongoing ticket got closed.

So I managed to get hold of a phone number that works and that does not cut off (no, it is not South Africa. Dublin and then India).

1. Pro Support says they can see the email but they closed it and I need to be transferred to Basic Support.
2. Basic Support says they can't help as the issues tarted during Pro Support so they need to transfer me to Pro Support.
3. Pro Support says as I am now on Basic Support so they are transferring me back to Basic Support Hardware division.
4. Hardware division says as the BIOS diagnostic scan is not returning and error, this is a software support issue and as software is not covered under basic support (their warranty support division took 3 months of communication and gave me the wrong info) they are transferring me to the software devision and I need to pay extra.
5. Software division says they going to check and it will cost me a R1000 or whatever. I told them to read the original email which concluded it is not a software issue. They read through the email. They asked all the questions and checked all the usual troubleshooting. They wanted proof that windows was reinstalled (CMD > Systeminfo). They said they can confirm it is not a software issue as all trouble shooting has been done, everything is up to date and they have no further solutions. They transfer me back to hardware division although at this stage I am probably speaking to an Angel in the New Jerusalem Division. She is an Indian lady, super cool, lovely voice. I digress....
5. Jerusalem Division asked to take screen control and collect some system logs (which I could have done myself), they check the Systeminfo again. She contacted the upper most department who is busy going through the logs. They come back and say it is hardware issue and the GPU needs to be replaced.
6. I am now getting a new ticket for replacement parts in a couple of days and if parts are available.

So that is 3 hours and 30 minutes . The difference between Basic Support and Pro Support warranty is 3 hours and 30 minutes and R20 000.

"One or more of your parts are delayed. We expect them to be available on Wed, May 13, 2026. Once received, we'll contact you to schedule your appointment."

Looks like I am in for a long wait.

NOW you tell me! Just bought another 16GB to upgrade to 32GB because MS told me so.

I would not have touched the PC knowing the follwoing:

- Windows 11 running on unsupported hardware
- 4GB RAM
- No SSD.
