Hi All,

Might sound like a dumb question, but i am wondering... Is Windows 2008 able to make snapshot backups of remote PC's for instance Windows XP Machines?

Thanks

I don't think so - actually, I'm very sure it can't but I know Norton Ghost can do it, one of the latest corp type versions.

Nope 2008 can't.

Ghost Corporate can do it ($$$)
and so can FOG (Free Open Ghost) (Mahala)

We use FOG, and it works brilliantly. 30 brand new identical machines, in 1 Lab. Install single machine including all drivers, updates, Office, IDE's etc. Remote snapshot. Deploy said remote snapshot to all PC's. Setup up Active Directory configuration in FOG. Automatically adds all new deployments to domain.

Job done. Once the first install is complete, the snapshot and deployment took about 2 hours for 30 machines over a 100MB network.

Really easy. Also, if you install the FOG service (tiny), you can control all from a single console, and schedule a machine to snapshot at time x:00, it will then shutdown at that time and create a snapshot, uploading to a destination of your choice. There are lots of other nice features, all for free.
